* Campus Facts

As the academic flagship of the UT System's 14 component institutions, UT-Austin has come far from its beginning in 1883, when it had only one building, eight teachers, two departments, 221 students and a 40-acre campus. Today, the main campus has 357 acres and 119 buildings that are home to more than 48,000 students, 2,334 faculty, and almost 15,000 staff members. UT-Austin has 15 colleges and schools and it offers degrees in 270 programs. Each semester more than 6,000 courses are offered to students.

The median age of undergraduates is 21.4 years.

Nontraditional age students, those 25 years old and over, comprise 11% of all undergraduates.

In the Graduate School, the median age is 30.3 years; 13% are 40 years old or older.

* Matriculation

Relatively large percentages of first-time entering freshmen at UT-Austin remain enrolled through the start of their sophomore year. Among the first-time freshmen who entered UT-Austin from 1984 through 1992, 84% returned for the fall semester of their sophomore year; approximately 75% returned for the start of their junior year.

* Scholarships

For 1992-93 The University of Texas at Austin awarded 9,648 scholarships to undergraduates including 212 freshman National Merit Scholars, 47 National Achievement Scholars, and 1,706 Texas Achievement Awards and Texas Achievement Honors Awards. The average stipend was $1,985 per recipient.

A total of 5,763 graduate students received $17.5 million dollars in scholarship and fellowship support for the 1992-1993 school year.

* Housing

More than 6,000 students, approximately 12% of the total student body, live in university-owned housing: 5,362 live in residence halls, 790 in university apartments, and 200 in women's cooperative housing. Approximately 46.8% of freshmen live in residence halls.

In addition, the Division of Food and Housing maintains vacancy listings to help students locate off-campus rental housing.

* Sports

Students at the UT-Austin participate in intramural sports at a very high rate - 86% of all students were involved in one or more recreational sports activities. In 1993-1994 there were more than 400 touch football teams, 500 softball teams, 450 basketball teams, and 140 soccer teams participating in recreational sports leagues.

In addition, Recreational Sports:

  • employs over 1,000 students per semester;
  • instructs over 4,000 students per semester in aerobics classes;
  • rents outdoor equipment to over 4,500 students each year;
  • accommodates over 12,000 different individuals each day in recreational activities.
