* Campus Facts

As the academic flagship of the UT System's 15 component institutions, UT-Austin has come far from its beginning in 1883, when it had only one building, eight teachers, two departments, 221 students and a 40-acre campus. Today, it has a main campus of more than 350 acres that is home to approximately 48,000 students, a full-time teaching staff of about 2,700 and about 15,000 staff members. UT-Austin has 15 colleges and schools and it offers degrees in more than 270 programs. Each semester more than 6,000 courses are offered to students.

The median age of undergraduates is 21.2 years.

Nontraditional age students, those 25 years old and over, comprise 10.8% of all undergraduates.

In the Graduate School, the median age is 30.4 years; 11.9% are more than 40 years old.

The average age in Law School is 25.6 years.

* Matriculation

Relatively large percentages of first-time entering freshmen at UT-Austin remain enrolled through the start of their sophomore year. Among the first-time freshmen who entered UT-Austin from 1986 through 1995, 85% returned for the fall semester of their sophomore year; approximately 77% returned for the start of their junior year.

The table below shows the percentage of students from the summer and fall 1995 entering class who returned for the start of their sophomore year in the fall of 1996. The data are presented within selected categories of High School Rank and Recentered SAT Total Test score. The original SAT Total Test scores were converted to Recentered SAT Total Test scores to construct this table.

Typical costs for an undergraduate Texas resident living in a university-owned residence hall and taking 13 hours each semester during 1996-1997 are estimated to be:

* Scholarships

For 1995-96, The University of Texas at Austin awarded 7,519 scholarships to undergraduates including 886 freshman National Merit Scholars, 29 National Achievement Scholars, and 1,690 Texas Achievement Awards and Texas Achievement Honors Awards. The average stipend was $2,200 per recipient.

A total of 4,554 graduate students received $26.5 million dollars in scholarship and fellowship support for the 1996-1997 school year.

* Housing

More than 6,000 students, approximately 12% of the total student body, live in university-owned housing. Approximately one half (47%) of freshmen live in residence halls.

In addition, the Division of Food and Housing maintains a listing of off-campus, privately-owned housing to help students locate off-campus rental housing.

* Sports

Students at the UT-Austin participate in intramural sports at a very high rate - 85% of all students were involved in one or more recreational sports activities. In 1995-1996 there were more than 400 touch football teams, 500 softball teams, 500 basketball teams, and 180 soccer teams participating in recreational sports leagues.

In addition, Recreational Sports:

  • employs over 1,000 students per semester;
  • instructs over 3,000 students per semester in aerobics classes;
  • rents outdoor equipment to over 4,500 students each year;
  • accommodates over 12,000 different individuals each day in recreational activities.
  • accumulates an estimated 2 million hours of recreational sports participation annually.
