Campus Facts

As the academic flagship of the UT System's 15 component institutions, UT-Austin has come far from its beginning in 1883, when it had only one building, eight teachers, two departments, 221 students and a 40-acre campus. Today it has a main campus of more than 357 acres, which makes it the largest single-campus institution in the nation. It is home to approximately 49,000 students, a full-time teaching staff of about 2,500, and about 11,000 staff members. UT-Austin has 15 colleges and schools, and it offers degrees in more than 270 programs. Each semester more than 6,000 courses are offered to students.

The average age of undergraduates is 20.9 years.

Nontraditional age students, those 25 years old and over, comprise 7.8% of all undergraduates.

In the Graduate and Professional Schools, the average age is 30.1 years; 10.6% are more than 40 years old.

Undergraduate Retention

Relatively large percentages of first-time entering freshmen at UT-Austin remain enrolled through the start of their sophomore year. Among the first-time freshmen who entered UT-Austin from 1989 through 1998, 86.2% returned for the fall semester of their sophomore year; approximately 79% returned for the start of their junior year.

Financial Aid

In 1998-1999, approximately 22,600 undergraduate students received $159.3 million dollars in financial support.

Scholarships

For 1998-1999, The University of Texas at Austin awarded 9,421 scholarships to undergraduates including 896 National Merit Scholars, 37 National Achievement Scholars, 239 National Hispanic Scholars, and 725 Presidential Achievement Scholars. The average stipend was $2,790 per recipient.

More than 6,300 graduate students received $31 million dollars in scholarship and fellowship support for the 1998-1999 school year.

Housing

More than 6,000 students, approximately 12% of the total student body, live in university-owned housing. Approximately one-half of freshmen live in residence halls.

In addition, the Division of Food and Housing maintains a listing of off-campus, privately-owned housing to help students locate off-campus rental housing.

Recreational Sports

Students at UT-Austin participate in intramural sports at a very high rate: 86% of all students were involved in one or more recreational sports activities. In 1998-1999 there were more than 300 touch football teams, 300 softball teams, 500 basketball teams, and 200 soccer teams participating in recreational sports leagues.

In addition, Recreational Sports:

  • employs more than 1,000 students per semester;
  • instructs more than 3,000 students per semester in aerobics classes;
  • rents outdoor equipment to more than 4,500 students each year;
  • accommodates more than 12,000 different individuals each day in recreational activities;
  • accumulates an estimated 2 million hours of recreational sports participation annually.
