The School of Architecture
2006-2008 Transfer Guide for Texas Community College Students

(also available in PDF format)

Degree Programs Available

  • Bachelor of Architecture
  • Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies
  • Bachelor of Science in Interior Design

Students must complete at least sixty semester credit hours in residence at UT Austin to earn an undergraduate degree in the School of Architecture.

Special Notes

  • Admission to the School of Architecture is offered only in fall semesters and is highly competitive; acceptance depends upon available space and the applicant's qualifications compared to the entire applicant pool. Transfer applicants must submit two letters of recommendation and a portfolio of work to the Undergraduate Admissions Committee.

  • Students with design studio transfer credit must submit samples of their design work to the associate dean for undergraduate programs before registering in design studio coursework at UT Austin; on the basis of this work, the level at which the student enters the design sequence is determined and appropriate credit toward the degree is assigned.

  • Core curriculum transfer credit from Texas community colleges is guaranteed to apply toward UT Basic Education requirements, but not all core courses are suitable for a particular major field of study. Recommendations in this Guide satisfy core requirements with coursework needed for the major, enabling students to complete lower-division degree requirements with minimal credit.

  • Grades from transfer credit are not combined with grades earned at UT Austin to determine the student's internal University grade point average. Transfer credit is not granted for courses in which grades of D or F are earned.

  • Physical education activity credit cannot be applied toward any degree requirement in the School of Architecture, but grades and credit in such courses count toward transfer admission.

  • A maximum of six semester hours in Air Force, Military, or Naval Science may be applied as elective credit toward degrees in the School of Architecture by students commissioned through the UT Austin ROTC program.

Use of Transfer Credit Toward Degrees

The Office of Admissions evaluates courses from other institutions for comparability with UT Austin coursework, but only the Dean's Office in the School of Architecture has authority to approve transfer credit for use in a degree program.

  • Questions concerning degree/graduation requirements and degree applicability of transfer credit should be directed to the Dean's Office, School of Architecture, GOL 2.116, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/471-0109).

  • Questions concerning transfer admission and transfer credit evaluation should be directed to the Office of Admissions, MAI 7, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/475-7399).

Prospective Architecture transfer students are urged to become familiar with the School's curricula and rules in the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008.

Students who transfer directly from a Texas community college may choose to graduate under UT Austin catalog rules in effect during the time they attended the community college. Students declaring the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008 must complete all degree requirements by the end of the summer session 2014 (2015 for the Bachelor of Architecture).

High School Preparation

The School of Architecture requires all students to have completed two years of high school study in a single foreign language. Transfer students who do not meet this requirement are assessed a deficiency by the Dean's Office; removal of deficiencies is required for graduation.

To remove a foreign language deficiency, credit for the first and second semester college level courses in a language is required. Credit used to remove a deficiency cannot be used to satisfy any other degree or graduation requirement.

Prospective students should complete coursework needed to satisfy high school deficiencies prior to transfer.

Courses Recommended for Transfer
expressed in Texas Common Course Numbering designations

Writing & Literature

  • ENGL 1301;
  • ENGL 1302 (applies as lower-division Substantial Writing Component credit); and
  • one literature survey course chosen from ENGL 2321, 2322, 2323, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2331, 2332, or 2333.

U.S. & Texas Government

GOVT 2301 & 2306.

(Because community colleges organize the two-semester legislative requirement sequence differently, it is strongly recommended that students take both courses at one institution.)

Mathematics

Differential and integral calculus, taken either in a sequence of two courses or as one intensive course, chosen from:
MATH 2413 (differential) & 2414 (integral); or
MATH 2417 (Accelerated Calculus I)

(The credit values of MATH 2413 & 2414 vary among community colleges; the second digit of course numbers may be 3, 4, or 5, but course content is comparable.)
