Use of Transfer Credit Toward Degrees

The Office of Admissions evaluates courses from other institutions for comparability with UT Austin coursework, but only the Dean's Office in the McCombs School has authority to approve transfer credit for use in a degree program.

  • Questions concerning degree/graduation requirements and degree applicability of transfer credit should be directed to the Undergraduate Programs Office, McCombs School of Business, CBA 2.400, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/471-0690).

  • Questions concerning transfer admission and transfer credit evaluation should be directed to the Office of Admissions, MAI 7, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/475-7399).

Prospective Business transfer students are urged to become familiar with the School's curricula and rules in the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008.

Students who transfer directly from a Texas community college may choose to graduate under UT Austin catalog rules in effect during the time they attended the community college. Students declaring the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008 must complete all degree requirements by the end of the summer session 2014.

Special Notes

  • Due to space limitations in the McCombs School, admission is highly competitive; acceptance depends upon available space and the applicant's qualifications compared to the entire applicant pool. Transfer students are admitted only in fall semesters; applications are not considered for spring and summer terms.

  • Applicants with fewer than sixty semester hours of transferable credit must have completed BCIS 1305 or 1405; Calculus I (preferred, offered as MATH 2413, 2417, or 2513) or Business Calculus I (MATH 1325 or 1425); and at least one additional course chosen from Calculus II (offered as MATH 2414 or 2419) or Business Calculus II (if available), or ECON 2301 or 2302.

  • Applicants with sixty or more semester hours of transferable credit must have completed BCIS 1305 or 1405; Calculus I (preferred, offered as MATH 2413, 2417, or 2513) or Business Calculus I (MATH 1325 or 1425); Calculus II (preferred, offered as MATH 2414 or 2419) or Business Calculus II (if available); and ECON 2301 & 2302.

  • Core curriculum transfer credit from Texas community colleges is guaranteed to apply toward UT Basic Education requirements, but not all core courses are suitable for a particular major field of study. Recommendations in this Guide satisfy core requirements with coursework needed for the major, enabling students to complete lower-division degree requirements with minimal credit.

  • Grades from transfer credit are not combined with grades earned at UT Austin to determine the student's internal University grade point average. Transfer credit is not granted for courses in which grades of D or F are earned.

  • Physical education activity credit cannot be applied toward any degree requirement in the McCombs School, but grades and credit in such courses count toward transfer admission.

  • A maximum of twelve semester hours in Air Force, Military, or Naval Science may be applied as elective credit toward degrees in the McCombs School by students commissioned through the UT Austin ROTC program.

High School Preparation

The McCombs School requires all students to have completed two years of high school study in a single foreign language. Transfer students who do not meet this requirement are assessed a deficiency by the Dean's Office; removal of deficiencies is required before students declare a specific major within the School.

To remove a foreign language deficiency, credit for the 2nd-semester college level course in a language is required. Credit used to remove a deficiency cannot be used to satisfy any other degree or graduation requirement.

Prospective students should complete coursework needed to satisfy high school deficiencies prior to transfer.

Courses Recommended for Transfer
(expressed in Texas Common Course Numbering designations)

Writing & Literature

  • ENGL 1301;
  • ENGL 1302 (applies as lower-division Substantial Writing Component credit); and
  • one literature survey course chosen from ENGL 2321, 2322, 2323, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2331, 2332, or 2333.

U.S. & Texas Government

6 semester hours chosen from one of the following combinations:
GOVT 2301 & 2302; or
GOVT 2305 & 2306; or
GOVT 2301 & 2305; or
GOVT 2301 & 2306.

(Because community colleges organize the two-semester legislative requirement sequence differently, it is strongly recommended that students take both courses at one institution.)

U.S. History

6 semester hours chosen from HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2327, 2328, or 2381.

Mathematics

For the Engineering Route to Business major: a calculus sequence chosen from
MATH 2413, 2414, & 2415 (differential, integral, & multivariable); or
MATH 2417 & 2419 (Accelerated Calculus I & II).

For all other majors: two semesters of calculus. Two paths are suggested for community college transfer students:

  1. Preferred: MATH 2413 & 2414 (differential & integral) or MATH 2417 & 2419 (Accelerated Calculus I & II). Because students who transfer in mid-sequence often have difficulty in subsequent calculus coursework, completion of both courses at one institution is recommended.

  2. MATH 1325 or 1425 (Business Calculus I) and a second business-oriented calculus course, if available. Second-semester business calculus is offered only by Austin Community College, Collin County Community College District, Dallas County Community College District, and Grayson County College. For this reason, and because MATH 1325 or 1425 may not prepare students for second-semester courses in a standard calculus sequence after transfer, option #1 above is strongly recommended instead. Students transferring MATH 1325 or 1425 alone are assessed individually to determine appropriate follow-up coursework in calculus.

(Credit values in MATH 2413, 2414, & 2415 vary among community colleges; the 2nd digit of course numbers may be 3, 4, or 5, but course content is comparable. At some community colleges the calculus sequence extends into a 4th course, MATH 2316, which must be taken to complete multivariable calculus for the Engineering Route to Business major.)

Foreign Language

For the International Business major: credit in one language through the 4th college-level semester, chosen from courses numbered
1311, 1411, or 1511 (1st semester);
1312, 1412, or 1512 (2nd semester); and
2311 & 2312 (3rd & 4th semesters).
(Students should select a language associated with the international area in which they plan to specialize.)
For all other majors: credit in one language through the 2nd college-level semester, chosen from courses numbered
1311, 1411, or 1511 (1st semester) and
1312, 1412, or 1512 (2nd semester).
(This requirement can also be satisfied by having completed two years of high school study in a single foreign language.)

Social Science

ECON 2301 & 2302; and
3 additional semester hours chosen from ANTH 2351, PSYC (excluding 1300 & 2317) or SOCI.

Natural Science

For the Engineering Route to Business major:
CHEM 1311 (or 1411); and
PHYS 2425 & 2426 (or 2325, 2326, 2125, & 2126).
For all other majors: an integral two-course sequence in one discipline, chosen from:
  • ASTR 1403 & 1404, PHYS 1403 & 1404, or PHYS 1411 & 1412;
  • BIOL 1406 & 1407, 1408 & 1409, 1411 & 1413, or 2401 & 2402;
  • CHEM 1405 & 1407, 1406 & 1408, or 1411 & 1412;
  • GEOL 1403 & 1404; or
  • PHYS 1401 & 1402, 1405 & 1407, or 2425 & 2426.

(Community colleges may number lecture & lab credit separately, for example CHEM 1311 + 1111 are equivalent to CHEM 1411. Combined lecture+lab courses are applicable, though laboratory credit is required only in PHYS courses for the Engineering Route to Business major.)

Fine Arts

3 semester hours in visual/performing arts chosen from ARCH 1301 or 1302, ARTS (excluding 1320 & 1321), DANC (excluding 2325), DRAM (excluding 2366 & 2367), HUMA 1315, MUAP, or MUSI.

Other Coursework

ACCT 2301 or 2401 (Financial Accounting);
ACCT 2302 or 2402 (Managerial Accounting);
BCIS 1305 or 1405; and
SPCH 1321 (preferred) or 1315.
