Students must complete at least sixty semester credit hours in residence at UT Austin to earn an undergraduate degree in the College of Liberal Arts.

Use of Transfer Credit Toward Degrees

The Office of Admissions evaluates courses from other institutions for comparability with UT Austin coursework, but only the Dean's Office in the College of Liberal Arts has authority to approve transfer credit for use in a degree program.

  • Questions concerning degree/graduation requirements and degree applicability of transfer credit should be directed to the Student Division, College of Liberal Arts, GEB 2.200, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/471-4271).

  • Questions concerning transfer admission and transfer credit evaluation should be directed to the Office of Admissions, MAI 7, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/475-7399).

Prospective Liberal Arts transfer students are urged to become familiar with the College's curricula and rules in the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008.

Students who transfer directly from a Texas community college may choose to graduate under UT Austin catalog rules in effect during the time they attended the community college. Students declaring the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008 must complete all degree requirements by the end of the summer session 2014.

Special Notes

  • Core curriculum transfer credit from Texas community colleges is guaranteed to apply toward UT Basic Education requirements, but not all core courses are suitable for a particular major field of study. Recommendations in this Guide satisfy core requirements with coursework needed for the major, enabling students to complete lower-division degree requirements with minimal credit.

  • Grades from transfer credit are not combined with grades earned at UT Austin to determine the student's internal University grade point average. Transfer credit is not granted for courses in which grades of D or F are earned.

  • College Algebra (MATH 1314 or 1414) cannot be applied toward the mathematics requirement or toward the total number of semester hours required for a degree in the College of Liberal Arts, but grades and credit in the course count toward transfer admission.

  • Physical education activity credit cannot be applied toward any degree requirement in the College of Liberal Arts, but grades and credit in such courses count toward transfer admission.

Courses Recommended for Transfer
expressed in TCCN designations. Courses used to fulfill area requirement below may not be taken on a pass/fail basis.

Writing & Literature

  • ENGL 1301;
  • ENGL 1302 (applies as lower-division Substantial Writing Component credit); and
  • one literature survey course chosen from ENGL 2321, 2322, 2323, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2331, 2332, or 2333.

U.S. & Texas Government

6 semester hours chosen from one of the following combinations:
GOVT 2301 & 2302; or
GOVT 2305 & 2306; or
GOVT 2301 & 2305; or
GOVT 2301 & 2306.

(Because community colleges organize the two-semester legislative requirement sequence differently, it is strongly recommended that students take both courses at one institution.)

Mathematics

For the BS in Psychology:
a statistics course chosen from MATH 1342 or 2342; and
a calculus course chosen from MATH 2413 or 2417.
For the BA with a major in Economics:
a calculus sequence chosen from MATH 2413, 2414, & 2415 or MATH 2417 & 2419. (MATH 1324, 1325, or 1425 may not be applied to this requirement.)
For the BA with a major in Urban Studies:
a statistics course chosen from MATH 1342 or 2342; and
a calculus course chosen from MATH 2413 or 2417. (MATH 1325 or 1425 may not be applied to this requirement.)
For the BA degree (all other majors):
3 semester hours in MATH excluding 1314, 1350, 1351, & 1414.

(Credit values in MATH 1342, 2342, 2413, 2414, & 2415 vary among community colleges; the 2nd digit of course numbers may be 3, 4, or 5, but course content is comparable. At some community colleges the calculus sequence extends into a 4th course, MATH 2316, which must be taken to complete multivariable calculus.)

General Culture

3 semester hours in visual/performing arts chosen from ARCH 1301 or 1302, ARTS (excluding 1320 & 1321), DANC (excluding 2325), DRAM (excluding 2366 & 2367), HUMA 1315, MUAP, MUEN, or MUSI.

BIOL 1406 & 1407;
CHEM 1411 & 1412; and
