Bachelor of Science degrees in
Biochemistry Biology Chemistry Clinical Laboratory Science

(also available in PDF format)

Degree Programs Available

Bachelor of Science degrees in:

  • Biochemistry
    (options: biochemistry or computation )

  • Biology
(options: ecology, evolution, & behavior; human biology; marine & freshwater biology; microbiology; cell & molecular biology; neurobiology; plant biology; or teaching)

  • Chemistry
    (options: chemistry, computation, or teaching)

  • Clinical Laboratory Science (medical technology)

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with majors in Biochemistry, Biology, and Chemistry are described in a separate Transfer Guide.

Students must complete at least sixty semester credit hours in residence at UT Austin to earn an undergraduate degree in the College of Natural Sciences.

Use of Transfer Credit Toward Degrees

The Office of Admissions evaluates courses from other institutions for comparability with UT Austin coursework, but only the Dean's Office in the College of Natural Sciences has authority to approve transfer credit for use in a degree program.

  • Questions concerning degree/graduation requirements and degree applicability of transfer credit should be directed to the Student Division, College of Natural Sciences, WCH 1.106, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/471-4536).

  • Questions concerning transfer admission and transfer credit evaluation should be directed to the Office of Admissions, MAI 7, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/475-7399).

Prospective Natural Sciences transfer students are urged to become familiar with the College's curricula and rules in the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008.

Students who transfer directly from a Texas community college may choose to graduate under UT Austin catalog rules in effect during the time they attended the community college. Students declaring the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008 must complete all degree requirements by the end of the summer session 2014.

Special Notes

  • Core curriculum transfer credit from Texas community colleges is guaranteed to apply toward UT Basic Education requirements, but not all core courses are suitable for a particular major field of study. Recommendations in this Guide satisfy core requirements with coursework needed for the major, enabling students to complete lower-division degree requirements with minimal credit.

  • Grades from transfer credit are not combined with grades earned at UT Austin to determine the student's internal University grade point average. Transfer credit is not granted for courses in which grades of D or F are earned.

  • College Algebra (MATH 1314 or 1414) cannot be applied toward the mathematics requirement or toward the total number of semester hours required for a degree in the College of Natural Sciences, but grades and credit in the course count toward transfer admission.

  • Physical education activity credit cannot be applied toward any degree requirement in the College of Natural Sciences, but grades and credit in such courses count toward transfer admission.

  • A maximum of nine semester hours in Air Force, Military, or Naval Science may be applied as elective credit toward a degree in the College of Natural Sciences by students commissioned through the UT Austin ROTC program.

High School Preparation

The College of Natural Sciences requires all students to have completed in high school two years of study in a single foreign language and three years of study in mathematics at the level of Algebra I or higher. Transfer students who do not meet these requirements are assessed a deficiency by the Dean's Office; removal of deficiencies is required for graduation.

  • To remove a foreign language deficiency, credit for the 2nd-semester college level course in a language is required.

  • To remove a mathematics deficiency, credit for MATH 1314, 1316, 1324, or 1414 is required.

Prospective students should complete coursework needed to satisfy high school deficiencies prior to transfer.

Courses Recommended for Transfer
expressed in TCCN designations. Courses used to fulfill area requirements below may not be taken on a pass/fail basis.

Writing & Literature

  • ENGL 1301;
  • ENGL 1302 (applies as lower-division Substantial Writing Component credit); and
  • one literature survey course chosen from ENGL 2321, 2322, 2323, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2331, 2332, or 2333.

U.S. & Texas Government

6 semester hours chosen from one of the following combinations:
GOVT 2301 & 2302; or
GOVT 2305 & 2306; or
GOVT 2301 & 2305; or
GOVT 2301 & 2306.

(Because community colleges organize the two-semester legislative requirement sequence differently, it is strongly recommended that students take both courses at one institution.)

Mathematics

Students should complete at least precalculus before transfer; admission preference is given to those who also have completed at least one semester of calculus.

For the BS degrees in Biochemistry and Chemistry:
a calculus sequence chosen from MATH 2413, 2414, & 2415 or MATH 2417 & 2419.
For the BS in Biology:
a pair of calculus courses chosen from MATH 2413 & 2414 or MATH 2417 & 2419.
For the BS in Clinical Laboratory Science:
one calculus course chosen from MATH 2413 or 2417.

(Credit values in MATH 2413, 2414, & 2415 vary among community colleges; the 2nd digit of course numbers may be 3, 4, or 5, but course content is comparable. At some community colleges the calculus sequence extends into a 4th course, MATH 2316, which must be taken to complete multivariable calculus.)

Fine Arts

3 semester hours chosen from ARCH 1301 or 1302, ARTS (excluding 1320 & 1321), DANC (excluding 2325), DRAM (excluding 2366 & 2367), HUMA 1315, MUAP, MUEN, or MUSI.

Foreign Language

Credit in one language through the 2nd college-level semester, chosen from courses numbered
1311, 1411, or 1511 (1st semester) and
1312, 1412, or 1512 (2nd semester).
American Sign Language may also be used to fulfill this requirement:
SGNL 1301, 1401, or 1501 (1st semester) and
SGNL 1302, 1402, or 1502 (2nd semester).

U.S. History

6 semester hours chosen from HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2327, 2328, or 2381.

Social Science

3 semester hours chosen from ANTH, ECON (excluding 1301 & 1303), GEOG, PSYC (excluding 1300), or SOCI.

Natural Science

Community colleges may number lecture & laboratory credit separately, for example CHEM 1311 + 1111 are equivalent to CHEM 1411.

For the BS in Biochemistry:
