The College of Pharmacy
2006-2008 Transfer Guide for Texas Community College Students

(also available in PDF format)

Degree Programs Available

  • Doctor of Pharmacy

The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) is a six-year degree comprising two preprofessional years of study followed by a four-year professional curriculum. Coursework recommended in this Guide applies to the preprofessional curriculum.

Special Notes

  • The UT Office of Admissions admits eligible transfer students to the College of Natural Sciences, which administers the pre-Pharmacy program; subsequent admission to the professional curriculum is under the authority of the College of Pharmacy. Pre-Pharmacy admission does not imply or guarantee admission to the professional curriculum.

  • Transfer students may need at least one semester in residence at UT Austin to complete preprofessional requirements. Students who complete preprofessional requirements before transfer may apply for general admission and professional curriculum admission simultaneously. While pre-Pharmacy admission is available year-round, admission to the professional curriculum is available only for the fall semester.

  • Core curriculum transfer credit from Texas community colleges is guaranteed to apply toward UT Basic Education requirements, but not all core courses are suitable for a particular major field of study. Recommendations in this Guide satisfy core requirements with coursework needed for the major, enabling students to complete lower-division degree requirements with minimal credit.

  • Grades from transfer credit are not combined with grades earned at UT Austin to determine the student's internal University grade point average. Transfer credit is not granted for courses in which grades of D or F are earned.

  • Physical education activity credit cannot be applied toward any degree requirement in the College of Pharmacy, but grades and credit in such courses count toward transfer admission.

  • A maximum of nine semester hours in Air Force, Military, or Naval Science may be applied as elective credit toward a degree in the College of Pharmacy by students commissioned through the UT Austin ROTC program.

Use of Transfer Credit Toward Degrees

The Office of Admissions evaluates courses from other institutions for comparability with UT Austin coursework, but only the Dean's Office in the College of Pharmacy has authority to approve transfer credit for use in a degree program.

  • Questions concerning degree/graduation requirements and degree applicability of transfer credit should be directed to the College of Pharmacy, Office of Admission, 1 University Station A1900, Austin TX 78712-0120 (phone 512/471-4425).

  • Questions concerning transfer admission and transfer credit evaluation should be directed to the Office of Admissions, MAI 7, UT Austin, Austin TX 78712 (phone 512/475-7399).

Prospective Pharmacy transfer students are urged to become familiar with the College's curricula and rules in the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008.

Students who transfer directly from a Texas community college may choose to graduate under UT Austin catalog rules in effect during the time they attended the community college. Students declaring the Undergraduate Catalog 2006-2008 must complete all degree requirements by the end of the summer session 2015.

Foreign Language Requirement

The College of Pharmacy requires all students to have completed either two years of high school study or two semesters of college study in a single foreign language.

  • Transfer students without two years of high school foreign language must have credit for the 2nd-semester college level course in a language.

  • Credit used to establish foreign language proficiency cannot be used to satisfy any other degree or graduation requirement.

Prospective students should complete coursework needed to satisfy a high school foreign language deficiency prior to transfer.
