First generation college students are firsts in many ways – first in their family to attend college, first in being a role model to siblings, cousins, and friends because of their academic and leadership achievements, and first to often leave home to come to a two-year college or four-year university. At the CEC we want to be the FIRST to welcome and help first-generation college students.
We understand the level of commitment and dedication that has brought you here. And we also understand that as first-generation college students, you might face barriers that your peers might not encounter. We have learned that navigating the many aspects of college life can be challenging since first generation college students often do not have parents or family members who can guide them in this process. We also hear from students that it can be difficult to make decisions about majors and careers because of a lack of role models in the fields they are interested in.
