The world of work is gradually evolving in its diversity. With a growing global economy and a rise in multinational companies, employers are eager to develop a more diverse workforce to provide added benefit to their employees, customers and other stakeholders. Efforts to recruit and retain people from historically underrepresented groups have increased. This increase is more evident in some work sectors than others.

  • According to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Education, 85% of all faculty members at public and private colleges in the United States are white. The remaining 15% are represented as follows - 5% are black, 5% Asian American, 4% Latino, and 1% Native-American.
  • In 1995, 58% of people polled in the U.S. favored affirmative action programs designed to help blacks, women, and other minorities get better jobs. That percentage has risen steadily. In 2008, 70% of people polled in the U.S. favored affirmative action programs. (Source - The Pew Research Center For The People And The Press)
  • California is the most diverse state in the United States. Census Bureau statistics show African Americans, Asians, Native Americans and Hispanics represent 64% of the state's population. Almost 40% speak a language other than English at home.
