Explore Majors/Careers

For some, picking a major is as easy as picking a favorite color - they just know. For others, it’s a longer process of researching degree plans, trying various classes, and talking to professors and friends. magnifying glass

Choosing a career path is also an exploratory process. The US Department of Labor reports that most people in this country pursue five to seven careers in their lifetime. Gone are the days when a college student would choose a career for life.

So you might be wondering - where do I start?

We suggest you begin with your natural curiosity. Is there a major or career that you’re curious about? Then research it online. Visit the CEC library for over 2,000 resources pertaining to careers, majors, graduate schools, internships and more. We also have various handouts on career-related topics, and a What Can I Do With A Major In... booklet series.

Following your curiosity might be enough to help you clarify what you want in your future. If you aren’t feeling curious about anything, then a counseling session might help. Talking about your interests and what you are looking for in a major or a career might be the next step to get the process started.

We also recommend you meet with an academic advisor in the department or college you are considering. Academic advisors can answer your questions about the major, degree plans, and what other graduates with the major have pursued in the world of work.
