Test Your Choices
One way to clarify a major or career choice is to try it out. You might take a class and discover that the field is less interesting than you imagined. Or you might intern in a certain industry only to discover that the typical office climate is far from what you imagined. Reality testing your choices could save you invaluable time, money and energy. It could also teach you what you want and don’t want in your future work.

So you might be wondering - how do I get started?
To explore a major, consider any or all of these steps:
- audit a class
- take an introductory class
- contact a professor in our Faculty/Staff Contacts Database to ask questions about the field.
To explore a career, consider taking these steps sequentially:
- Research the career online and in our library
- Conduct an informational interview with a professional in the field
- Job shadow a professional
- Volunteer or intern in the field
Your college’s career services office may be able to help you with job shadowing and internship opportunities. If you are apprehensive about interning or job shadowing or if you just want to talk about how that might help you explore your options, a counseling appointment at the CEC would be a good first step.
