Biofeedback services

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback makes information about certain biological activities available to the mind. When the mind receives information about itself and the body, it can use this information to restore the body to a state of balance, thus relieving, for example, the effects of stress.

At the UT Counseling and Mental Health Center, biofeedback is one part of a multidimensional approach to dealing with stress. Biofeedback can maximize awareness of the body's stress response and then help change that response.
Because physical symptoms of stress can be indications of organic disease, biofeedback should not be undertaken without professional supervision.

Conditions Helped by Biofeedback

Conditions which may warrant a biofeedback referral include:

  • Headaches and muscular tension/spasms (e.g. back, neck, shoulders).
  • Gastrointestinal disorders, including ulcers, spastic colon or colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Cardiovascular conditions associated with tension such as high blood pressure, Raynaud's Syndrome, chest pains, elevated heart rate.
  • Performance anxiety (e.g. public speaking, tests).
  • Insomnia.
  • Phobic/anxiety attacks.
  • Bruxism (grinding teeth).
  • Skin rashes, hives, and other dermatological conditions resulting from stress.
