 INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING at CMHC

Initial Consultation

You may call or walk into the Center between 8 am and 4 pm to schedule your first initial consultation. You will be asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to your Initial Consultation in order to fill out preliminary assessment paperwork. If you fail to arrive ahead of time, your Initial Consultation will have to be rescheduled. when scheduling your Initial Consultation, we try to match you with the therapist who has the expertise to meet your needs. At this Initial Consultation, which lasts about an hour, a counselor will talk with you to help you decide how best to deal with your concerns and what are the most appropriate services for your needs.

Typically referrals will be made to one or more services provided by the Center.Individual counseling is available to students and couples for a limited time period. In addition to Individual Counseling, we offer Group Therapy and Psychiatric Services. In the case of couples, one member must be a student. In some instances, University and/or community agencies will be identified for outside referrals.The Counseling Center has trained counselors, including psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists to help you. At some point during individual therapy, your counselor may suggest that you could benefit from Group Therapy. This treatment will be explained to you by your counselor.

Defining Your Therapy Goals: If you are referred to individual therapy, your on-going counselor will work with you to define your therapy goals and how they can be accomplished in the shortest period of time. Number of Sessions: How long your therapy lasts will depend on the discussions with your counselor about your specific situation. If your personal concerns require longer-term therapy than we are able to provide, your counselor will suggest various referral options in the Austin area.
