 PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES at CMHC

What is a Psychiatrist? A psychiatrist is a physician who has had special training in the field of mental disorders and psychological problems. In addition to providing psychotherapy, psychiatrists are trained to perform diagnostic evaluations, evaluate physical problems, prescribe medications, and arrange hospitalization when needed.

Why was I asked to see a psychiatrist? One of several situations may warrant the suggestion that you visit a psychiatrist:

  • Your therapist may want a second opinion on your problem and treatment plan;
  • You may benefit from medications your therapist is unable to prescribe.
  • Medical factors may be suspected of contributing to your problem.
  • Your problem may be causing concerns about your safety or ability to function.

What happens when I see a psychiatrist? The psychiatrist will meet with you to review your medical and mental health problems, your family history, and your general development. The doctor may request laboratory tests or past treatment records with your consent. At the end of the evaluation you will discuss the nature of the problem together and discuss treatment options. Follow-up visits may or may not be recommended.
Does seeing a psychiatrist mean I will be put on medication? No. You will have an evaluation and your physician will suggest treatment options. You are free to accept or decline medications recommended by your physician. We encourage you to be open with your physician about your concerns.
