First-year Seminars (FS 301)Cindy Wilson, program coordinator What is the First-year Seminars Program? The First-year Seminars Program offers small courses taught by University of Texas at Austin professors, administrators and staff members many of whom are outstanding figures in their fields, winners of teaching awards, and members of the university's Academy of Distinguished Teachers. First-year Seminars will normally enroll 18 students, unless classroom size or pedagogical needs require a lower limit. How do I enroll? If you attend freshman orientation, you may enroll in a fall semester First-year Seminar during summer registration. First-year Seminars are in high demand, and very few seats will be available after freshman orientation. A few First-year Seminars will also be offered during the spring session. Those seminars will be listed in the online and printed Course Schedule that is available to students before registration for spring classes in the fall. What are the benefits of a First-year Seminar? The small size of the seminar allows your instructor to act as a mentor and your classmates to become your friends. Students consistently report that the seminars aid significantly in making the transition from high school to college-level writing and thinking. The seminars also introduce you to the resources of the university and assist you in identifying interesting subjects for further research and future careers. First-year Seminars fulfill a lower-division writing requirement. Spring 2008 First-year Seminar Course Descriptions
