Learning Communities

The Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies sponsors many programs and activities specifically designed to enhance student development by supporting academic success while fostering personal growth. Learning Communities is a division of Undergraduate Studies that supports programs for first-year students, honors students, and seniors.

The First-year Interest Group Program, University Honors Center, Texas Leadership Center, and Freshman Reading Round-up are all part of Learning Communities. Please read below to learn more about what each program offers.

First-year Interest Group (FIG) Program

FIGs are:

- a small group of first-year students who share classes

- a connection with experienced peer mentors

- a great way to get to know people

  • A Freshman Interest Group (FIG) is a cohort of up to 25 students who take two to four courses together. In addition, they also attend a 1-hour seminar once a week focusing on:

    - study and time management strategies
    - social opportunites and issues
    - campus life and involvement
    - plus a lot more...
  • Residential FIGs offer freshmen the opportunity to live on campus as well as take classes together with their FIG.
  • Transfer Interest Groups (TrIGs) are a great way to personalize transfer students' UT experience and build on what they already know about how to succeed in college.

Freshman Reading Round-up (FRR)

Freshmen are invited by UT Austin faculty to discover relevant ideas proposed by current and contemporary authors through reading from a select list of interesting books.

Through seminars held the day prior to each fall semester, freshmen participating in the Reading Round-Up will access distinguished faculty who can discuss and relate various books’ ideas, messages, and relevance to contemporary issues. Join fellow students as you discover the university’s best books, best minds, and best friends.

University Honors Center (UHC)

The University Honors Center supports the undergraduate honors community through sponsorship of exciting co-curricular programs such as field trips and performing arts events. Additionally the center serves as a campus resource for information on:

  • Honors programs and degree plans
  • Academic Honor Societies
  • Honors Residence Halls
  • Major fellowships and scholarships

Texas Leadership Development (XL)

Qualifying seniors nearing completion of their academic program can acquire relevant personal and professional skills designed to integrate them effectively into their professional career of choice.
