Program Descriptions

Academic English Program
If you plan to enter a Master's or Ph.D. program at The University of Texas at Austin or another university in the United States, AEP is designed for you. Your classmates will already hold at least an undergraduate degree and have definite academic goals. AEP serves people with low-intermediate, intermediate, high-intermediate, and advanced English proficiency.

Intensive Academic Study
In addition to expanding your language skills, AEP specifically prepares you for graduate study. You will be trained to lead and participate in seminars, work effectively in a team, understand complex, fast-paced lectures, write documented academic papers, read a variety of authentic materials, and give presentations.

Core AEP Classes
In order to quickly prepare you for graduate work in English, your classes will meet five days a week with daily homework. Classes meet for a total of 18 hours weekly. AEP courses concentrate on the areas of academic writing, listening/speaking, reading/discussion, and grammar/idioms. Classes have an average of 11 to 12 students. We make every effort to individualize your learning experience.

Elective Courses
Our TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT preparation courses focus on both content and test-taking stategies. We also offer a pronunciation class that will help you speak more clearly, focusing on individual sounds as well as word-level and sentence-level patterns. There is a language proficiency prerequistite for elective courses.

Colloquia
Specially arranged for AEP, these lectures on a variety of topics feature speakers from the university and Austin.

Admission Requirements
You must hold a university degree and show at least low-intermediate proficiency through a TOEFL score or an oral interview (see application form). Admission to AEP does not guarantee admission to The University of Texas at Austin or any other university.

 

English Learning Program
If you need to expand your English for communication, study, business, or pleasure, ELP is designed for you. ELP students include undergraduates, visiting scholars, business people, and family members of UT faculty and students. ELP students can choose intensive or part-time study, depending on their visa status. We offer 6 levels of instruction, from mid-beginning to advanced. Classes have an average of 11 to 12 students.

Intensive Study
Intensive study in the ELP Program includes the four core courses shown below. Classes meet 5 days a week for a total of 18 hours weekly. There will be daily homework.

Part-time Study
You may register for any of the core courses or elective courses to suit your language needs or your schedule. Core courses meet 4.5 hours a week and will have daily homework. Elective courses meet 4 hours a week.

Core ELP Courses
Listening and Speaking - Communicate more comfortably and increase your understanding in a variety of settings, from informal conversations to formal presentations.


Reading and Discussion - Improve your comprehension of fiction and non-fiction, and develop your vocabulary, discussion skills, and reading speed.


Writing - Express yourself more effectively in academic and non-academic writing, with work on content, accuracy, and organization.


Grammar and Idioms - Increase your accuracy in spoken and written contexts, and learn idiomatic expressions common in U.S. English.

Test Preparation Electives

Admission Requirements
Graduation from at least high school
in your country. We recommend that you know at least some English vocabulary before enrolling.

Beyond the Classroom
  • ESL Computer Lab  - Our lab allows you to do hundreds of activities for language learning, such as conducting research on the Internet, accessing audio files, and having on-line discussions with classmates.
  • Field Trips  - Explore historic places, such as San Antonio's famous River Walk, and see Texas scenery at a reasonable cost. Family members and friends can join.
  • PALS - The Partnership to Advance Language Studies and Cultural Exchange program matches international and U.S. students for conversation and fun. 
  • WHAT - Get out and explore Austin with What's Happening Around Town, a weekly newsletter prepared especially for ESL students.
  • TGIF!  - Join other students and faculty for conversation and lunch at Thank Goodness It's Friday! for social activities such as bowling, happy hours, and international potluck lunches. 
  • ESL End-of-the-Semester Reception  - Enjoy the activities and special food at this big party which brings together members of all programs, their families, and faculty.

Austin, Texas
The capital of Texas, Austin is both a historic city and one of the fastest growing high-tech centers in the U.S. The 1888 State Capitol Building dominates the center of the city, while nearby streets display well-preserved buildings from earlier periods of Texas history. Throughout the city, tree-filled greenbelts and public parks illustrate why Austin is famous for its environmental sensitivity. Live music is also a major industry, attracting visitors from all over  the world to its many clubs and music festivals.
 
 
Living in Austin
Surveys rank Austin among the top ten cities in the U.S. to live. The climate is temperate, so all kinds of outdoor sports and activities are popular. The people of Austin are friendly and enjoy life. Each season brings many festivals and athletic competitions. UT Austin is easily reached by a university shuttle-bus system and the Austin public transportation system. Austin has many apartments, private dormitories, condominiums, and houses for rent. Shopping centers on convenient bus routes have foods from around the world, as well as many household items.
