Academic English Program

If you plan to enter a Master's or Ph.D. program at the University of Texas or another university in the United States, the AEP program is designed for you. Your classmates will already hold at least an undergraduate degree and have definite academic goals. AEP serves people with low-intermediate, intermediate, high-intermediate, and advanced English proficiency.

Intensive Academic Study

In addition to expanding your language skills, AEP specifically prepares you for graduate study. You will be trained to lead and participate in seminars, work
effectively in a team, understand complex, fast-paced lectures, write documented academic papers, read a variety of authentic materials, and give presentations.

Core AEP Classes

In order to quickly prepare you for graduate work in English, your classes will meet five days a week with daily homework. Classes meet for a total of 18 hours weekly. AEP courses concentrate on the areas of academic writing, listening/speaking, reading/discussion, and grammar/idioms. Classes have an average of 11 to 12 students. We make every effort to individualize your learning experience.

Elective Courses

Our TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT preparation courses focus on both content and test-taking stategies. We also offer a pronunciation class that will help you speak more clearly, focusing on individual sounds as well as word-level and sentence-level patterns. there is a language proviciency prerequistite for elective courses.

Colloquia

Specially arranged for AEP, these lectures on a variety of topics feature speakers from the university and Austin.

Admission Requirements

You must hold a university degree and show at least low-intermediate proficiency through a TOEFL score or by an interview (see application form). Admission to AEP does not guarantee admission to UT Austin or any another university.

English Learning Program

If you need to expand your English for communication, study, business, or
pleasure, ELP is designed for you. ELP students include undergraduates, visiting scholars, businesspeople, and family members of UT faculty and students. ELP students can choose intensive or part-time study, depending on their visa status. We offer 6 levels of instruction, from mid-beginning to advanced. Classes have an average of 11 to 12 students.

Intensive Study

If you choose intensive study in the ELP Program, you will have the four core courses shown below. Classes meet 5 days a week for a total of 18 hours weekly. There will be daily homework.

Part-time Study

You may register for any of the core courses or elective courses to suit your language needs or your schedule. Core courses meet 4.5 hours a week and will have daily homework. Elective courses meet 4 hours a week. See our application form for schedule details.

Core ELP Courses

Listening and Speaking- Communicate more comfortably and increase your understanding in a variety of settings, from informal conversations to formal presentations.

Reading and Discussion- Improve your comprehension of fiction and non-fiction, and develop your vocabulary, discussion skills, and reading speed.

Writing- Express yourself more effectively in academic and non-academic writing, with work on content, accuracy, and organization.

Grammar and Idioms- Increase your accuracy in spoken and written contexts, and learn idiomatic expressions common in US English.

Test Preparation Electives

Admission Requirements

Graduation from at least high school
in your country. We recommend that you know at least some English vocabulary before enrolling.
