ESL Services ADMINISTRATION

   
Michael T. Smith is the Director of ESL Services. He has taught ESL in Utah, Hawaii, and Mexico. He has a BA and an MA certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language, a Masters in Linguistics, and he is currently finishing his PhD in foreign language education with an emphasis on aspects of motivation in language learning. He speaks Spanish and has studied both Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese.

Teresa Baker is the Program Coordinator of ESL Services. She received her BA in Linguistics and her MA in TESL from the University of Illinois. She has studied Spanish and Japanese, and traveled in Mexico and Thailand. Although her administrative duties now keep her out of the classroom, she has taught courses and designed materials in grammar (her true love), listening/speaking, TOEFL preparation, oral communication, reading, composition, and English through current events.

John Duke is the Academic English Program/Test Preparation Specialist. He received his BA in Russian from The University of Texas at Arlington and an MA in Slavic Linguistics from The University of Texas at Austin. He is presently a doctoral candidate (ABD) in Foreign Language Education at UT. He spent six years studying and teaching in Russia; in St. Petersburg he served as Director of the USIA English Teacher Education Program and was an Assistant Professor at St. Petersburg State University.

Pat Jobe is the English Language Program Specialist. She currently teaches reading, writing, and listening / speaking in ELP. She has taught all aspects of ESL in university, community education, and English language institutes and has taught Spanish in public schools. In Seville, Spain, she taught foreign language teaching methods for the Hudson-Mohawk Consortium of Colleges and was responsible for administration and teaching in an EFL program. She completed a BA in English/Spanish Education and an MA in Foreign Language Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She speaks Spanish and has studied Portuguese and Turkish.

Shelley Broussard is the Administrative Assistant for ESL. She is very happy to be part of the ESL family, as she herself has a great love for the English language and international students. Even though she is not a teacher, she prides herself on her creative writing, spelling and grammar abilities, and is more than happy to help any student with their English. She has lived in Italy, Korea, Japan, and Sweden (some of those years being spent as an international student herself!) and has visited too many places to count. She loves music and art from all over the world, as well as cooking and eating dishes from the four corners of the globe. She has no fear of wonton papers, banana leaves, gnocchi, couscous steamers, or chimichurri sauce.

John Ball received his BA in Literature at Oklahoma State University and completed his MA in TESOL at Oklahoma City University. He began his career as an ESL/EFL instructor in Colima, Colima Mexico at the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM); he enjoyed the foreign experience and stayed in Colima for four happy and successful years. His future plans include continued study of the ESL field. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, studying Web design, and practicing Spanish. Since arriving to UT ESL Services, he has taught in the AEP and ELP programs, worked on the administration team, and assisted with the design of the ESL Services Web page.

David Fox, a graduate of UT, holds a masters degree in Adult ESL. He was awarded a 3 semester full-scholarship when he was an undergraduate at UT. He began teaching ESL at UT in 1972 and left three years later to become an ESL consultant for the Texas Education Agency for 5 years until he became the director of the ESL Center at Sam Houston State. He taught in Malaysia for 5 years with SUNY-Buffalo, Indiana University, as well as UT. In addition, he taught 2 years in Japan for Texas A&M. Most recently he taught for the U.S. Department of Defense Language Institute in San Antonio, Texas.

Tracy Frank received her MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Washington in Seattle and her BA in English from Suffolk University in Boston. Before happily settling down in Austin, she lived and taught in Thailand and Japan and traveled extensively throughout Asia and New Zealand. Her greatest source of satisfaction as an ESL instructor is providing her students with the confidence and skills they need in reading, writing, and grammar to reach their goals.

Wanda Griffith graduated with a PhD in Sociology with an specialty in Social Psychology and Statistics from Washington State University. After teaching for a number of years at various universities, she became a certified ESL teacher. She has traveled quite a lot-- up to 49 countries on last count--and she travels whenever she can. She came to Austin in 1998 after nearly five years of being in Korea teaching English and culture. These days she also designs web pages when she's not teaching English.

Susan Kerr teaches listening / speaking, writing and grammar / idioms in AEP. Once upon a time, she earned a BA in English from Rice University, an MA from Indiana University, and a PhD in English from the University of Texas. Living in Mexico for two and a half years inspired her ongoing fascination with Spanish cultures. A free-lance writer as well as a teacher, she has taught ESL in several local schools.

Carol King, received her Doctor of Jurisprudence and Masters of Education degrees from The University of Texas and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French from Austin College. She especially enjoys teaching composition and academic writing, and is also the co-author of two ESL textbooks, From Writing to Composing (Cambridge University Press) and Building Skills for the TOEFL, 2nd Ed. (Longman - Pearson). She has taught ESL in Malaysia, Tunisia, and Algeria.

Josh Lindsay recieved his BA in Political Science fromTexas A and M University. After jobs in San Francisco as a clerk and in Austin as a construction worker, he got his first teaching position at the JFK American School in Queretaro, Mexico. He returned to Austin in 1996 to complete an MA in ESL/EFL. After graduation, he left for Turkey and taught ESL courses at Istanbul Technical University and Koc University for three years before returning to Austin again.

Linda Lombard chose her career in teaching ESL to international students after spending years in private business and commercial real estate. While completing her MEd degree at the University of Houston, she taught in several intensive language programs including Rice University and Houston Community College. She then worked as an ESL instructor at the Language and Culture Center of the University of Houston. After moving to Austin, she joined the faculty of ESL Services at UT.

John Madden teaches in the AEP and ELP programs. In addition, he is the ESL Services Computer Lab Coordinator. He has taught ESL, Spanish and English in the Texas public schools and worked as a reporter and photographer. He served in the Peace Corps in Kenya where he taught ESL and learned Swahili. He holds degrees in English and Journalism from the University of Illinois, and an MA in Foreign Language Education (TESOL) from the University of Texas where he is now a doctoral student.

Letha McIntire holds a PhD from the University of Kansas and an MA from the University of Hawaii. She teaches courses in both the AEP and ELPprograms. She has traveled abroad extensively and has lived in Germany, Taiwan, and Japan. Her languages are Chinese and Japanese. In addition to teaching ESL, she is deeply involved in the study of East Asian culture, especially the arts of painting, calligraphy, and ceramics.

Phyllis Potash holds an MA in Linguistics from San Diego State University, a Lifetime Secondary Teaching Credential in English awarded at UCLA, and a BA in English from UCLA. Phyllis' ESL background draws on graduate course work at UT Austin and at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). Prior to coming to Texas, Phyllis taught ESL in Lyon, France as well as at UCSD and at a private school in La Jolla, California. In Texas, she has taught in the AEP and ELP programs at UT Austin and in the ESL program at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.

Mark Powell teaches in the ELP program. He received his B.A. In Russian and a TESL Certificate from Brigham Young University in 1993. He completed his M.A. In the Slavic Department at UT-Austin in 1996 and is currently working on his Ph.D. In the Foreign Language Education program. He has taughtRussian at UT for several years. In addition, he has taught ESL in Russia and here in Texas. He has made several trips to Russia as a student, ESL teacher and as a researcher. His research interests include foreign language anxiety in a study abroad setting and computer-mediated communication. After finishing his Ph.D., he would like to work at a university teaching both English and Russian or working in Russia.

Melissa Powers currently teaches advanced listening/speaking and intermediate grammar. Her teaching career began seven years ago in rural China, where she spent three years teaching through The Amity Foundation. Prior to her China adventure, she completed her BA in German and English, with an emphasis in technical writing, at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. While pursuing her MA in TESL at the University of Texas, she worked with UT's professional development program as a teaching assistant for writing and speaking courses taken by international graduate students. She speaks both Mandarin Chinese and German.

Mary Lou Price received her MA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. She has taught in ESL Services since 1992 and taught college-level French before becoming an ESL teacher. She has lived in the Philippines and France and has traveled and studied in Europe, Central America, and Mexico. She enjoys teaching all subjects but has most recently been teaching reading, grammar, and test preparation.

Eric Schenk has taught classes in the AEP and ELP programs, and graduate ESL courses. He earned his BA in Cultural History from the University of Wisconsin, and his MA in Applied Linguistics from Northern Arizona University. He has also studied philosophy, education, Spanish, French, Bahasa Malaysia, Kannada, and Hindi, and has been to Europe, Central America and Asia. He loves to travel, and teaches ESL because of the opportunity it affords to meet people from all over the world.

Hollie S. Thomas holds a BA in Music Composition and an MA in Education with an emphasis in TESL. She decided to become an ESL instructor while in the former Soviet Union where she first met some very enthusiastic ESL teachers. In addition, she has traveled in Europe, Central America and Australia. She has been teaching ESL since 1993 and especially enjoys teaching writing and grammar. Her other interests are journal writing, brunching, making music, and traveling.

Carolyn Thompson currently teaches listening / speaking in the AEP program. She holds a BA in Spanish and a Master's in Foreign Language Education, both from the University of Texas. Although she's a Texan, she has studied and traveled in Mexico, Central, and South America and loves New England in the fall.

Carol Walkerhas spent the majority of years of her career in other countries having worked and taught English in the Republic of the Philippines; Beirut, Lebanon; Montevideo, Uruguay; Callao, Peru;Hong Kong and Nanjing, and the People's Republic of China. In addition, she has taught ESL at Texas Tech University. In the People's Republic of China, she collaborated with her students and the Dean to produce a bilingual dictionary of Latin and Greek Roots which was published by Longman ltd. In addition to teaching English, she has served the United Methodist Church as a Peace With Justice Educator in Texas, Lousiana, and Arkansas. She has four children and eight grandchildren. She has a great enthusiasm for teaching international students and enjoys music, literature, drama, dance, gardens, swimming at Barton Springs, and walking.

Terri Wells currently teaches listening / speaking and reading in ELP. She has taught ESL for four years. She holds a BA in Literary Studies from the University of Texas at Dallas and an MA in TESL from the University of North Texas. In addition, she is a PhD student in Foreign Language Education (Applied Linguistics) at the University of Texas. She is the co-founder and past co-chair of the Texas Foreign Language Education Conference and is currently the Chief Officer of the Foreign Language Education Students Association.

Jane Wolfarth received her BA in instrumental music and English from Oklahoma City University, and her MS in speech-language pathology from the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center. Jane taught English in Seoul, Korea, from 1992 to 1993, and since then has taught in English schools in Norman, Oklahoma and Austin, Texas. She lists her current interests as listening/speaking, pronunciation, ethnic cooking, classical music and world travel.
