To install the software, create a directory on your hard drive. Change to that directory. Insert the floppy disk containing the system in a floppy drive. Type the command n:SPEEDE, where n: is the floppy drive containing the diskette. This will extract all the necessary files and place them in the directory you have created. *****WARNING: THIS SOFTWARE SHOULD BE RUN FROM DOS. IT IS NOT DESIGNED ***** TO RUN UNDER WINDOWS 3.1 OR ANY OTHER VERSION OF WINDOWS. ***** HOWEVER, IT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO RUN PROPERLY UNDER WIN 3.1 & ***** 98, & I HAVE RUN IT UNDER WINDOWS 95 & NT, BUT STRANGE AND ***** NON-REPEATABLE ERRORS SOMETIMES OCCUR. ***** THE ETN to SPEEDE CONVERSION PROGRAM HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO ***** HANDLE THE 00 SEMESTER YEAR, AND CONVERT IT TO 2000. ***** THE SPEEDE PRINT PROGRAM HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO ALLOW YOU TO ***** PRINT TO A FILE, IN ADDITION TO SENDING IT TO A PRINTER. One limitation of the software is that it MUST be executed from the directory in which it is installed. It will NOT work if you put the directory in your path and try to execute it from another directory. This also means that files to be printed/translated must be copied to this directory also. We hope to solve this problem in a future release. To execute the program, copy the file or files you wish to process to the directory where the system is installed, change to that directory, and type the command SP_MENU. You should get the main menu (illustrated on the next page). Please give the system a full workout. We currently have a problem with files with non-standard end-of-line conventions, such as Unix (CR) or MAC (LF). We are working on this also. The ETN to SPEEDE conversion will allow you to convert an ETN format transcript to the SPEEDE format. You may now specify the ISA 15 value: P (production) or T (test). 3. Option 3 allows you to maintain the grade table that converts ETN grades to SPEEDE codes and grades. 4. Option 4 allows you to print a SPEEDE format transcript or view it on the screen. You can now print the transcript to a file, in addition to sending it to the printer. 5. Option 5 allows you to print an ExPRESS format transcript or view it on the screen. 6. Option 6 allows you to maintain the trading partner database for the SPEEDE to ETN conversion. It is mainly concerned with converting the SPEEDE ISA record code qualifier and code for sending and receiving transcripts to a FICE code. 7. Option 7, SPEEDE/ExPRESS acknowledgements, handles generating expected acknowledgements from outgoing files, generating actual acknowledgements and storing acknowledgements from incoming files, and reconciling expected and actual acknowledgements. 9. Option 5 allows you to print an ExPRESS format transcript or view it on the screen in a format more like an original transcript print 0. This option returns you to DOS. This option allows you to assign grades to the SPEEDE format miscellaneous grade codes (500+). These grades are used in printing SPEEDE format transcripts. 3. This option will allow you to update your schools grade qualifier. This is used in translating ETN format transcripts to SPEEDE format. 4. This option allows you to edit the SPEEDE to ETN grade table. This table is used in the conversion from SPEEDE format transcripts to ETN format. 0. This option returns you to the main menu. OPTION 2 This option will bring up a screen of file names, and let you pick one to be converted. Press to return to the main menu. OPTION 3 This option will bring up all the grades in the ETN to SPEEDE grade table, and allow you to modify them. These grades are used when converting from the ETN transcript format to the SPEEDE format. The grade listed will be put in the grade field on the course record, and the qualifier will be put int the grade qualifier field. The 500 and up codes are explained in the guide and in the "Edit miscellaneous grades" option of the SPEEDE to ETN conversion menu. OPTION 4 This option will bring up a screen of file names, and let you pick one to be printed. Press to return to the main menu. NOTE: The list of files includes all files in the directory (except .EXE, .DBF, NDX, .BAT, or .COM). This makes it possible to select a file the program cannot handle. It will only handle SPEEDE transcripts. To print and ExPRESS transcript, use OPTIONs 5 or 9. After selecting a file, you will be prompted for the number of lines per page. If you enter 23 lines per page or less, the transcript will be sent to the screen. Otherwise, it will be sent to the printer. One warning about the printing: the system is not very smart about print errors. If your printer runs out of paper, or some other problem, you will get a prompt, and the only thing you can do is abort the program and restart. This is a function of the underlying system, and we haven't found a way around it yet. Hopefully we will in a future release. OPTION 5 This program is the same as OPTION 4, but it handles the ExPRESS format transcripts. You may ADD or DELETE records, or modify the information on existing records. 2. This is the same as option 1, except that the key is the ISA code qualifier and the ISA code. 3. This option lists all the records in the Trading Partner table, in order by either FICE code, or ISA qualifer and ISA code. 0. This option returns you to the main menu. The Incoming files will have actual acknowledgements created for transmission, and will have any acknowledgements stored for reconciliation with the "expected acknowledgements". 2. Option 2 will reconcile received and expected acknowledgements, and report on any discrepancies, such as data fields that do not match and acknowledgements received that have no match with an expected acknowledgement. 3. Option 3 will check for any expected acknowledgements that have not been matched with received acknowledgements, and that were sent more than X number of days earlier (you will be prompted for X). OPTION 9 This program is the same as OPTION 5, but in a more traditional format. Added Items: ETNTOSP$.EXE This is a standalone module for converting ETN transcripts to the SPEEDE format. It will convert a file with the name ETyymmdd.ETN (ETN format, yymmdd is today's date in year month day format) into a file named Eymmddnn.OUT (SPEEDE format, ymmdd is today's date - last digit of year month day, nn is a counter, starts with 00). SPTOETN$.EXE This is a standalone module for converting SPEEDE transcripts to the ETN format. It will convert a file with the name ETyymmdd.SPE (ETN format, yymmdd is today's date in year month day format) into a file named ETyymmdd.ETN (ETN format, yymmdd is today's date) SPEEDPR$.EXE This is a standalone module for printing SPEEDE transcripts.
