April Focus: APRIL 16: SELENA DAY IN TEXAS
Selena Quintanilla-Perez, a third-generation Texan of Mexican and Cherokee ancestry, was the lead singer of the band Selena y Los Dinos. In 1990, her album "Ven Conmigo" was the first Tejano album to ever win gold. Although her first language was English, she sang Spanish phonetically. Her biculturalism and ability to relate to fans both north and south of the border made her one of the most popular Latina performers of all time. Months after her death, her first (and only) English-speaking album was released hitting record sales and becoming the first album by a Hispanic artist to debut at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Two weeks after her death, Governor George W. Bush declared April 16, 1995 as Selena Day in Texas. 20 years after her death, the late Grammy-award winner continues to inspire new generations of Latinos (male and female alike) across the U.S., mak ing her worthy of recognition as an accomplished artist.
