What is an Ombudsperson?

An ombudsperson is an independent, neutral third party who assists in resolving problems, concerns, and complaints.  An ombudsperson will provide counseling, conduct shuttle diplomacy, negotiations, and mediations.  The word originated in Sweden in the early 1800’s when an office was created to investigate citizen’s complaints against the government. Many campuses, state agencies, and corporations have ombuds offices.

The Office of the Ombudsperson at The University of Texas at Austin is composed of caring and dedicated staff including a part-time ombudsperson, who is also a student, student assistants, and a full time administrative associate.
