Appendix J. Student Campus Violence
A. Policy StatementIt is the policy of the University of Texas at Austin to strive to maintain an environment that is free from intimidation and one in which students may be educated to their fullest potential. The University should foster an understanding of difference and cultivate the ethical and moral issues that are the basis of a humane social order. Therefore, the University will not tolerate physical abuse, threats of violence, or physical assault. B. ScopeThis policy applies to all students of the University of Texas at Austin. C. Reporting a SituationAny student in an emergency situation requiring immediate attention should telephone 911. A student wishing to file a complaint regarding violent or threatening behavior may call the police and/or Student Judicial Services in the Office of the Dean of Students at 471-2841. If a student is concerned about behavior that has occurred or is occurring off-campus, he or she may wish to contact the Austin Police Department (911 for emergencies; 974-5000 for nonemergencies). Calling 911 from a campus phone will connect a student with the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). Students may contact UTPD from off-campus by calling 471-4441. Students may choose to file a complaint with Student Judicial Services, whether or not they choose to pursue criminal charges. D. DisciplineUnder subchapter 11-300 of the Institutional Rules on Student Services and Activities, notwithstanding any action taken by civil authorities or agencies charged with the enforcement of criminal laws, the Dean of Students may initiate disciplinary proceedings against a student who intentionally or recklessly causes physical harm, or the reasonable apprehension of such harm, to any person on University premises or at University-sponsored activities. For assistance: Questions regarding campus violence involving students should be directed to the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Judicial Services. Information is also given at the Student Judicial Services Web site, http://www.utexas.edu/depts/dos/sjs/. |
