Master of Arts
Facilities include state-of-the-art laboratories in psychoacoustics, auditory physiology, and speech production. Two audio laboratories in the Department of Speech Communication are also available. The Speech and Hearing Center of the College of Communication provides a comprehensive facility for clinical training and research. Additional facilities include Academic Computing and Instructional Technology Services and state and community institutions and agencies. The master's and doctoral degree programs in communication sciences and disorders provide training in speech/language pathology, audiology, deafness studies/education of the deaf, and speech and hearing science. The Master of Arts with a major in communication sciences and disorders provides graduate preprofessional training. The Doctor of Philosophy is a research degree; doctoral students can expect opportunities to work closely with the faculty on research and to participate in the publication of research findings. All doctoral students are expected to achieve mastery of research design principles and methods appropriate to their program of study. Applicants to the program must meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate School; however, satisfying these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Each applicant's credentials are scrutinized by members of the faculty of the program. No single criterion, such as grade point average or GRE score, is given undue weight in the decision process; every attempt is made to assess the special strengths that the applicant might bring to the program.
With the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee and the graduate dean, work toward the major may be divided among two or more areas in communication. To be counted toward the degree, all coursework in the major must be at the graduate level and must be completed with a grade of at least B. The student should complete all requirements for the degree in one to two years of graduate study. Individual study programs must be arranged in consultation with the graduate adviser. Students seeking professional certification in speech/language pathology, audiology, or education of the deaf must meet specific coursework and clinical experience requirements. Information about these is available from the graduate adviser.
