Facilities for Graduate Work

Facilities for graduate work include both an excellent general library system and a world-renowned research library, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. In modern British and American literature, the latter provides outstanding opportunities for critical, textual, and bibliographical studies. There are also fine collections in earlier British literature (including the Wolff Collection), Americana, theatre arts, photography, and other subjects of significance in the humanities.

Areas of Study

Courses are offered in English and American literature; ethnic and Third World literatures; criticism; folklore, popular culture, and cultural studies; language and linguistics; bibliography and textual criticism; women, gender, and literature; English and computers; rhetoric; creative writing; and the teaching of English at the college level.

Degree Requirements

Master of Arts

A total of thirty-three semester hours of work is required, of which at least six (the minor) must be in a related field outside the Department of English. The creative writing concentration is an option for students seeking a Master of Arts. Details are available from the graduate adviser.

As preparation for work on the Master of Arts with a major in English, a strong undergraduate background in British and American literature and language is desirable, plus advanced courses in related fields.

Doctor of Philosophy

To enter the doctoral degree program, all students must pass the qualifying examination. Students who began their graduate work at the University must pass the examination in the spring semester of the second year of graduate study.

After passing the qualifying examination, the student completes about twenty-four to thirty-three semester hours of additional coursework; specific requirements are available from the graduate adviser. Students who began graduate study at another institution may petition the graduate adviser to transfer applicable coursework from the other school. Students seek admission to candidacy for the doctoral degree after completing this coursework, passing the doctoral three-area examination, and receiving approval of the dissertation prospectus. Most students seek admission to candidacy by the end of the third year of doctoral study.
