Admission Requirements

Candidates for a master's degree in Slavic languages must have a bachelor's degree with a major in Slavic or Russian or must demonstrate equivalent knowledge. A student admitted to the graduate program without this background must acquire it by special coursework for which no graduate credit is given.

To be admitted to the doctoral degree program a student must have a master's degree in Slavic languages.

Degree Requirements

Master of Arts

Three major fields of concentration are available: Slavic linguistics, Russian literature, and applied linguistics and pedagogy. Students may minor in a second concentration or, with the approval of the graduate adviser, in art history, comparative literature, drama, economics, geography, government, history, general linguistics, music, sociology, or area studies. The program consists of fifteen semester hours of coursework in the major, twelve semester hours in the minor, three hours of advanced Russian composition and conversation, and six additional hours for the thesis. With the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee, the student may substitute a master's report (three hours) and three additional hours in the major field for the thesis. Each student must demonstrate a reading knowledge of French or German; those who concentrate in linguistics must also demonstrate a sound knowledge of a second Slavic language. Both these requirements may be met by examination or by coursework without graduate credit. Students must pass an examination in Russian and present an acceptable master's thesis or report.

Further information about the master's degree program and requirements is available from the graduate adviser.

Doctor of Philosophy

Three major fields of concentration are available: Russian literature and culture, Slavic linguistics, and applied linguistics and pedagogy. Candidates may minor in a second concentration or in any of several related fields.

The program consists of fifteen semester hours of coursework in the major, nine semester hours in the minor, and three hours of advanced Russian composition and conversation, all beyond those submitted for the master's degree, and six hours in the dissertation course. Each student must demonstrate reading knowledge of a second research language; those concentrating in Slavic linguistics must also demonstrate a sound knowledge of a third Slavic language. Both of these requirements may be met by examination or by coursework without graduate credit. To be admitted to candidacy, all students must pass an advanced Russian language examination and a set of comprehensive examinations based on coursework and a departmental reading list for the major field of concentration.

A detailed explanation of the doctoral program and requirements is available from the graduate adviser.
