Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts
Studio Art Major
- Basic education requirements: At least thirty-nine semester hours as described in this chapter in the section "Basic Education Requirements for All Programs except Music Performance."
- Studio art: Sixty semester hours, consisting of
- Studio Art 301K, 301L, 302K, and 302L.
- Fifteen semester hours distributed among at least three of the following areas, with no more than six hours in any one area:
- Area A: drawing, life drawing, painting, two-dimensional design
- Area B: printmaking, photography, transmedia art
- Area C: sculpture, ceramics, metals
- Area D: visual communications (including communication design and typography and production).
- Thirty-three additional semester hours of studio art, of which at least twenty-four hours must be upper-division.
- Art history: Fifteen semester hours, consisting of Art History 301, 302, 303, and six semester hours of upper-division art history.

Design Major

The major in visual art studies is a
preprofessional academic program recommended for students
seeking teacher certification in art or planning to
pursue graduate training for visual arts careers in

the elderly or those with physical or mental disabilities.

Dance technique
To fulfill the degree requirements in
dance technique, the student must achieve a
suitable level of proficiency and obtain the
approval of the dance faculty. At the discretion of
the dance faculty, a student may be required to repeat specific dance technique courses in
addition to those required for the degree.
The student must be registered for dance technique each long-session semester
in residence.
Contemporary dance technique: Twenty-eight semester hours, consisting of
Sixteen semester hours chosen from Theatre and Dance 412C, 412D, and 422E.
Twelve semester hours of Theatre and Dance 422E.
Ballet: Twelve semester hours chosen from Theatre and Dance 212F, 212G,

Voice Performance Major

- Foreign language: Ten to fifteen
semester hours, including course 506 in French,
German, and Italian. The appropriate level of proficiency in one of these languages may
also be used to fulfill the basic education
requirement for foreign language. In such cases,
credit for courses 506 and 507 in that language may not be counted toward the degree.
- Drama: Six semester hours, consisting of Theatre and Dance 303V and 303W.
- Music

- Music literature: Music 313M, 313N, and 343J.
- Music theory: Music 605, 411, 612, 218J, 221J, 221K, 325L, 325M, 226J,
226K, 228G, and 328M.
- Composition: Music 214C, 224G, at least one semester of 224J and approval of
the music theory and composition faculty, two semesters of 228P, and 329E. Fulfillment of this requirement signifies the completion of original compositions of
a quality and a quantity sufficient to present the composition recital
described below. At the discretion of the music theory and composition faculty, a
student may be required to complete more than one semester of Music 224J.
- Recital
- Upon approval of the music theory and composition faculty, a composition
major must present a recital of his or her works. The recital must be
approximately thirty minutes in length, must consist
of works approved by the student's composition instructor, and must be given
during the student's last semester of Music 224J. It is graded by a jury of
designated music theory and composition faculty members. The student must receive
from the jury an average grade of at least
B for the recital; if the average grade is less
than B, the student, upon approval of the music theory and composition
faculty, must present another composition recital.
- In addition to the recital requirement,
a composition major pursuing a concentration in jazz studies must complete
an original composition or arrangement for performance by one of the University
jazz ensembles. This composition or arrangement must have the approval of the
director of jazz studies.
- Music ensemble: Eight semester hours of music ensemble courses as explained in
"School of Music Special Requirements"
in this chapter.
- Electives: To be chosen from courses
either within or outside the School of Music:
- Traditional concentration: Two semester hours.
- Jazz studies concentration: None.

Music Studies Major
The major in music studies is a preprofessional
academic program recommended for students seeking teacher certification in music or intending to
pursue graduate preparation for careers in areas such
as music education, music therapy, music management, music merchandising, music publishing,
and community music development.
- Basic education requirements: At least
thirty-nine semester hours as described in this chapter in the section
"Basic Education Requirements for All Programs except Music Performance."
- Music
- Performance: Twelve to fourteen semester hours, consisting of four semesters of
principal instrument course 210; two semesters of principal instrument course 260 and
approval of the faculty jury; and Music 210K, or equivalent proficiency, and approval
of the faculty jury. Music 210K or equivalent proficiency is required of all music
studies majors, regardless of principal instrument.
- Music theory and literature: Twenty-nine semester hours, consisting of Music 605,
411, 612, 313M, 313N, and 221J; two semester hours chosen from Music 226G, 226J,
and 226N; and Music 330M, 334, or 379K (Topic 6:
Topics in Symphonic Tradition, Topic 7: Topics in Instrumental
Concerto, or Topic 17: Topics in Instrumental Wind
Music). The choice of upper-division music
literature course must be approved by the
student's adviser; either 330M or 334 is
recommended for students pursuing a choral music
emphasis, and 379K is recommended for students pursuing an instrumental emphasis.
- Conducting: Four semester hours,
consisting of either Music 222J and 222K or Music
223J and 223K.
- Choral or instrumental music techniques, literature, and performance practices:
Seventeen semester hours in one of the following areas of emphasis.
- Choral music emphasis:
- Music 354C, 354F, 255V, and 356G.
- Music 354D or three semester hours approved by the music studies adviser.
- Two semester hours chosen from Music 255D (strings), 255E (brasses), and
255F (woodwinds).
- One semester hour chosen from Music 115D (violin), 115E (trumpet), 115F
(clarinet), 115G, and 155C. The course used to fulfill this requirement must involve
the study of a family of instruments different from that used to fulfill the
preceding requirement.
- Instrumental music emphasis: Music 354C or 354F; Music 155C, 255D,
255E, 255F, and 356J; and, with the approval of the music studies adviser, four
semester hours chosen from Music 115D, 115E, 115F, and 255M.
- Music ensemble: Eight semester hours of music ensemble courses as explained in
