In college and university communities, where the development of a student's
intellectual potential is emphasized, it is appropriate for superior scholastic
motivation and achievement to be recognized and rewarded. University-wide
honors are described in chapter 1 and in General Information. In
addition, the College of Liberal Arts provides recognition through the Dean's
Honor List and the Plan I Honors Programs. Students may also graduate with
departmental honors and earn membership in one or more of the honorary
scholastic societies open to undergraduates.
The Dean's Honor List, prepared at the end of each long-session semester, gives
official recognition and commendation to students whose grades for the semester
indicate distinguished academic accomplishment. Both the quality and the
quantity of work done are considered; a grade of F in any course makes
the student ineligible, regardless of other grades.
The Honor List is divided into five groups; according to the number of grade
points they earn, students are listed under one of the following
classifications:
Summa cum Laude (67 or more grade points)
Cum Laude Ampla et Magna (61 - 66 grade points)
Magna cum Laude (58 - 60 grade points)
Ampla cum Laude (55 - 57 grade points)
Cum Laude (52 - 54 grade points)
The Plan I Honors Programs comprise the various honors opportunities available
to Plan I students in the College of Liberal Arts. These include honors courses
from the freshman through the senior year, the Liberal Arts Honors Program, the
Humanities Program, and the departmental honors programs. Students are
encouraged to begin their honors work in the freshman year, though they may
wait until the end of the sophomore or the beginning of the junior year to
apply to the Humanities Program or to a departmental honors program.
The Plan I Honors Programs are designed for students who seek flexibility and
choice in their honors work and who want to pursue an honors degree in a
particular discipline. During the freshman and sophomore years, students have
the opportunity to enroll in special one-hour classes, have access to
supplemental academic advising, and may take honors sections of the basic
education requirement courses. This freshman- and sophomore-year experience
offers students the opportunity to prepare for honors work in the Liberal Arts
Honors Program, one of the college's departmental honors programs, or the
Humanities Program.
Admission at the freshman level is based on high school record and SAT or ACT
score. Eligible students receive an invitation to participate in the spring
before they enroll in the University. Others who believe themselves qualified
and who have not received an invitation may be admitted with the consent of the
Plan I Honors Programs director. Those seeking to do honors work at the
upper-division level should apply to the departmental honors adviser or to the
director of the Humanities Program.
Students who are eligible for the Liberal Arts Honors Program are notified at
the end of their sophomore year. The requirements for admission to the program
are a University grade point average of at least 3.35 and completion at the
University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework.
The requirements for graduation with liberal arts honors are (1) graduation
from the College of Liberal Arts with a Bachelor of Arts, Plan I; (2) a
University grade point average of at least 3.50 at graduation; (3) completion
of at least three upper-division liberal arts honors courses with a grade of at
least B in each; and (4) completion at the University of at least sixty
semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree. The statement "Liberal
Arts Honors" appears on the transcript of each graduate who fulfills these
requirements. The student may earn both liberal arts honors and special honors
in his or her major department.
Students should confer with their advisers to determine whether a liberal arts
honors course may be used to fulfill major or concentration requirements.
Departmental Honors Programs
Most
departments in the College of Liberal Arts offer departmental honors programs
to their majors. Minimum requirements for the completion of all such programs
include (1) a University grade point average of at least 3.00; (2) a
three-semester-hour thesis or research project, or a reasonable equivalent; (3)
satisfactory performance on a comprehensive examination in the major field, or
a reasonable equivalent; and (4) completion at the University of at least sixty
semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree. Students pursuing the
Bachelor of Arts, Plan I, with a major outside the College of Liberal Arts and
the College of Natural Sciences may also seek special honors in the major; the
requirements that the student will meet to earn departmental honors must be
approved in advance by the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and the dean of
the college or school in which the student's major is offered.
The statement "Special Honors in (name of department or program)" appears on
the transcript of each graduate certified as having completed the honors
program of that department. Normally, students may receive special honors in
only one department or program, and only in a department or program in which
they have completed the requirements for a major. Students seeking an exception
to this policy should consult the academic dean.
