Lower-Division Courses

301. Introductory Topics in Women's Studies.

Topics in addition to the following may be offered; these are listed in the Course Schedule. Three lecture hours a week for one semester, with one discussion hour a week if required by the topic. May be repeated for credit when the topics vary. Prerequisite: Varies with the topic and is given in the Course Schedule.

Topic 1: Population Problems.

Topic 2: Introduction to Child Psychology. General introduction to physical, social, and cognitive development from conception onward. Prerequisite: Psychology 301.

Topic 3: Children of Disrupted Families.

Topic 4: Family Relationships. Same as Child Development 304. Home Economics 304 and Women's Studies 301 (Topic 4) may not both be counted.

Topic 5: Child Development. Same as Child Development 313. Only one of the following may be counted: Child Development 333, Home Economics 333, Women's Studies 301 (Topic 5). Prerequisite: Psychology 301.

Topic 6: Ethnicity and Gender: La Chicana. Same as Mexican American Studies 319 (Topic 1: Ethnicity and Gender: La Chicana) and Sociology 308D.

Topic 7: Women's Reproductive Health for Nonscience Majors. Same as Nursing 307 (Topic 1: Women's Reproductive Health for Nonscience Majors) and Pharmacy 318W. Overview of contemporary women's reproductive health issues, with emphasis on historical, physiological, psychosocial, and cultural influences that affect the reproductive health of women during adolescence, the childbearing years, and midlife. Three lecture hours and one discussion hour a week for one semester. Offered in the fall semester of odd-numbered years. Prerequisite: Zoology 312 or consent of instructor.

This course is used to record credit the student earns while enrolled at another institution in a program administered by the University's Study Abroad Office. Credit is recorded as assigned by the study abroad adviser in women's studies. University credit is awarded for work in an exchange program; it may be counted as coursework taken in residence. Transfer credit is awarded for work in an affiliated studies program. May be repeated for credit when the topics vary.

321. Introduction to Women's Studies in the Humanities.
Multidisciplinary course examining the creative work of women and the image of women in history and art. Topics in addition to the following may be offered; these are listed in the Course Schedule. May be repeated for credit when the topics vary. Prerequisite: Varies with the topic and is given in the Course Schedule.

Topic 1: Women's Studies: Humanities. Same as American Studies 323 and English 370W (Topic 1: Women's Studies: Humanities). Only one of the following may be counted: American Studies 323 (Topic: Introduction to Women's Studies), 371 (Topic: Introduction to Women's Studies), 371 (Topic: Women's Studies: Humanities), English 376L (Topic: Introduction to Women's Studies), 376L (Topic: Introduction to Women's Studies in the Humanities), 376L (Topic: Women's Studies: Humanities), Women's Studies 321 (Topic: Introduction to Women's Studies in the Humanities), 321 (Topic 1: Women's Studies: Humanities). Topic 2: Women Writers.

Topic 3: English Women in History. Same as History 344P. An analysis of some of the images and roles of English women in history from ancient to modern times, with particular emphasis on the period from the eighteenth century to the present. History 366N (Topic: English Women in History) and Women's Studies 321 (Topic 3) may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.

Topic 4: Women and Literature: European Tradition. Same as English 322 (Topic 6: Women and Literature: European Tradition) and Scandinavian 323 (Topic 3: Women and Literature: European Tradition). Women's Studies 321 (Topic 4) and 321 (Topic: Women and Literature: England) may not both be counted. Prerequisite: For English majors, nine semester hours of lower-division English, including English 316K or the equivalent; for others, upper-division standing or consent of instructor.

322. Introduction to Women's Studies in the Social Sciences.
Multidisciplinary course using approaches from the social sciences to examine gender constructs and male/female roles. Topics in addition to the following may be offered; these are listed in the Course Schedule. May be repeated for credit when the topics vary. Prerequisite: Varies with the topic and is given in the Course Schedule.

Topic 1: Sociology of Gender. Same as Sociology 333K. Inequality between the sexes; men's and women's changing roles in society.

Topic 2: Sex Roles in Cross-Cultural Perspective.

Topic 3: Gender and Sex Roles. Same as Anthropology 324L (Topic 6: Gender and Sex Roles). Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.

323. Introduction to Women's Studies in the Natural Sciences.
Examination of gender constructs and male and female roles and differences and similarities, using approaches from the natural sciences. Topics in addition to the following may be offered; these are listed in the Course Schedule. Three lecture hours a week for one semester, or as specified for the topic. May be repeated for credit when the topics vary. Prerequisite: Varies with the topic and is given in the Course Schedule.

Topic 1: Primate Behavior. Same as Anthropology 323K. Two lecture hours and two laboratory hours a week for one semester. May be counted toward the Area C requirement for the Bachelor of Arts, Plan I.

Topic 2: Human Physical Growth and Development.

Topic 3: Women's Reproductive Health for Science Majors. Same as Pharmacy 338W. Examination in depth of advanced topics in women's reproductive health, with emphasis on biochemical, biological, developmental, and physiological processes. Three lecture hours and one discussion hour a week for one semester. Prerequisite: Biology 302 and 303; Zoology 316K or the equivalent is also recommended.

Topic 1: Literature of East-West Confrontation. Same as Comparative Literature 323 (Topic 1: Literature of East-West Confrontation), English 379N (Topic 1: Literature of East-West Confrontation), Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures 372 (Topic 9: Literature of East-West Confrontation), and Middle Eastern Studies 322K (Topic 5: Literature of East-West Confrontation). Novels, poems, and travel accounts of the encounter between East and West that changed literary history in both worlds. Oriental and African Languages and Literatures 372 (Topic 9: Literature of East-West Confrontation) and Women's Studies 340 (Topic 1) may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Nine semester hours of lower-division English, including English 316K or the equivalent.

Topic 2: Women and Family in Asia. Same as Asian Studies 372 (Topic 5: Women and Family in Asia). Oriental and African Languages and Literatures 372 (Topic 13: Women and Family in Asia) and Women's Studies 340 (Topic 2) may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing or consent of instructor.

Topic 3: African American Family. Same as African and African American Studies 374 (Topic 1: African American Family) and Social Work 360K (Topic 2: African American Family).

Topic 4: Literature and Society: Male/Female Roles in the Middle East. Same as English 379N (Topic 2: Literature and Society: Male/Female Roles in the Middle East), Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures 372 (Topic 7: Literature and Society: Male/Female Roles in the Middle East), and Middle Eastern Studies 331. Analysis of traditional and changing roles of women, men, and the family in Middle Eastern societies; study of modern feminist movements in selected Middle Eastern countries. Oriental and African Languages and Literatures 372 (Topic 36: Male/Female Roles in the Middle East) and Women's Studies 340 (Topic 4) may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Nine semester hours of lower-division English, including English 316K or the equivalent.

Topic 5: German Women Filmmakers. Same as English 322 (Topic 14: German Women Filmmakers), European Studies 361 (Topic 15: German Women Filmmakers), and Germanic Civilization 361E (Topic 5: German Women Filmmakers). Topic 6: Folklore, Gender, and the Middle East. Same as Anthropology 324L (Topic 11: Folklore, Gender, and the Middle East) and Middle Eastern Studies 322K (Topic 8: Folklore, Gender, and the Middle East). Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.

Topic 7: Medieval Society and the Sexes. Same as History 350L (Topic 15: Medieval Society and the Sexes). Prerequisite: Upper-division standing and consent of instructor.

Topic 8: Women in Asian Societies. Same as Asian Studies 361 (Topic 14: Women in Asian Societies) and History 350L (Topic 25: Women in Asian Societies). Prerequisite: Upper-division standing and consent of instructor.

Topic 9: Gender, Culture, and Society in the Southwest, 1320­1848. Same as History 352S and Mexican American Studies 374 (Topic 20: Gender, Culture, and Society in the Southwest, 1320­1848). Centering gender as a category of historical analysis, and sex as a social category, this course examines the peoples and historical developments in the Southwest from a gendered transhistorical and transcultural perspective from 1320 to 1848. Only one of the following may be counted: History 366N (Topic: Gender on Nineteenth-Century Borderlands), Mexican American Studies 374 (Topic: Gender on Nineteenth-Century Borderlands), Women's Studies 340 (Topic 9), 340 (Topic: Gender on Nineteenth-Century Borderlands). Partially fulfills legislative requirement for American history. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing or consent of instructor.

345. Topics in Women's Studies.
Topics in addition to the following may be offered; these are listed in the Course Schedule. May be repeated for credit when the topics vary. Prerequisite: Varies with the topic and is given in the Course Schedule.

Topic 1: Child Development.

Topic 2: The Family. Family history and origins; comparative family systems; the American family; social antecedents of family structure and process; family formation and dissolution; family and society.

Topic 4: Guidance in Adult-Child Relationships. Same as Child Development 366. Home Economics 366 and Women's Studies 345 (Topic 4) may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Child Development 313 (or Child Development 333 or Home Economics 333) or Women's Studies 301 (Topic 5: Child Development); three semester hours of upper-division child development, education, psychology, or sociology; and a University grade point average of at least 2. 35.

Topic 5: Women and Sport. Same as Kinesiology 352K (Topic 3: Women and Sport). Kinesiology 395 (Topic 22: American Women and Sport: A Historical Perspective) and Women's Studies 345 (Topic 5) may not both be counted.

Topic 6: Introduction to Developmental Psychology.

Topic 7: Feminism and Modernism. Same as American Studies 370 (Topic 4: Feminism and Modernism) and Sociology 352M (Topic 1: Feminism and Modernism). Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.

Topic 8: Gender-Based Discrimination.> Same as American Studies 370 (Topic 6: Gender-Based Discrimination) and Government 357M (Topic 1: Gender-Based Discrimination). American Studies 371 (Topic: Gender-Based Discrimination) and Women's Studies 345 (Topic 8) may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Six semester hours of lower-division government.

Topic 9: Women in Classical Antiquity. Same as Classical Civilization 348 (Topic 7: Women in Classical Antiquity ). Classical Civilization 342 (Topic: Women in Classical Antiquity) and Women's Studies 345 (Topic 9) may not both be counted.

Topic 10: Freudians and Feminisms. Same as English 322 (Topic 4: Freudians and Feminisms), Germanic Civilization 362E (Topic 1: Freudians and Feminisms), Philosophy 365 (Topic 1: Freudians and Feminisms), and Psychology 341K (Topic 2: Freudians and Feminisms). Only one of the following may be counted: English 323M (Topic 4: Freudians and Feminisms), Philosophy 327 (Topic: Freudians and Feminisms), Women's Studies 345 (Topic 10). Topic 11: Women's Rights Movement in the United States. Same as History 341N. A survey of the women's movement in the United States from the seventeenth century to the present. Partially fulfills legislative requirement for American history. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.

Topic 12: Family Policy Issues. Same as Sociology 352M (Topic 5: Family Policy Issues).

Topic 13: Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen. Same as English 322 (Topic 7: Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen), Germanic Civilization 323E (Topic 1: Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen), and Scandinavian 373 (Topic 6: Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen). English 323M (Topic 7: Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen) and Women's Studies 345 (Topic 13) may not both be counted. Topic 16: Feminism and Mass Culture. Same as English 370W (Topic 3: Feminism and Mass Culture). Topic 17: Language and Gender. Same as English 370W (Topic 4: Language and Gender). Topic 18: Postcolonial Women Writers. Same as English 370W (Topic 5: Postcolonial Women Writers). Prerequisite: Nine semester hours of lower-division English, including English 316K or the equivalent.

Topic 19: Social Development in Children. Development of social behavior (for example, sex typing and aggression) and social relationships. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing, and Psychology 304 or 333D.

Topic 20: Women through the Life Cycle. Same as English 379C (Topic 3: Women through the Life Cycle). Prerequisite: Completion of at least thirty semester hours of coursework, including English 316K or the equivalent, and consent of instructor.

Topic 21: Male-Female Communication. Same as Speech 365K. Studies of speech patterns related to the concepts of male and female, including sexism in speaking, patterns of male and female speaking, patterns of listening to males and females, speech in courtship and family, speech and sexual discrimination in careers. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.

360. Research and Thesis in Women's Studies.
Individual project or paper to be completed under the direction of a women's studies faculty member. Conference course. Prerequisite: Consent of the women's studies adviser.
