Signature Course Support
A first-year Signature Course is designed to introduce UT undergraduates to academic discussion and analysis of complex real-world issues presented from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The unique challenges of serving as a teaching assistant in a large format Signature Course include helping first-year students develop college level skills in writing, speaking and discussion. Signature Course TA's constitute a special cohort who have been recruited for their commitment to helping students mature intellectually while familiarizing them with the expectations of university-level coursework.
The School of Undergraduate Studies and UT Libraries, in collaboration with the UT Learning Center, has created a training program to help Signature Course TA's both develop and document their teaching effectiveness in their role as discussion leaders in these innovative interdisciplinary courses.
Participation in the program is voluntary (with the exception of the orientation and observation), but highly recommended. Evaluations from last year's Signature Course TA's indicate that training sessions not only equipped them with practical, just-in-time strategies, but fostered a sense of community among the teaching assistants.
Graduate students who take advantage of the opportunities listed below will receive a Teaching Certificate in First-Year Interdisciplinary Instruction from the School of Undergraduate Studies.
