What Students and Faculty are Saying...
About Being a Study Group Leader:
- Being a preceptor forced me to keep up with the class on a weekly basis, I met a ton of cool people
from my class, and it was nice to have regular meetings with my professor as well.
- I have become more comfortable talking with people I don't know. It has helped me see what a difference
it makes to keep up with studying for a class versus just studying before tests. It has also made me a better listener.
- I used to have a lot of trouble studying in groups because I felt that they were distracting but after this
experience I really understand how keep everyone on task and how to move the discussion along.
- I learned better communication skills by explaining concepts to people in different ways. I also learned a good
amount about how other people study. Listening to different points of views and approaches to studying the same material
helped make me more receptive to other people's ideas.
About Attending Study Groups:
- The preceptors were extremely willing to help... It's a great review every week. For the first two tests, I almost didn't
have to study because after attending the study groups, the information is already imprinted so that I would only need to review
before the test.
- My study group provided me with a set time each week when I had to study. We built a support network that was helpful during
times of high stress.
- ... take advantage of it. It's a really good opportunity to dive deeper into the lecture and course material to increase your
understanding of the material, and they help you get to know the students so lectures don't seem so full of strangers.
- It's definitely [a] must go! Study groups help [you] keep up in the class... it provides a more well-rounded outside of class
experience. Clearing up the gaps in notes and basically getting a better understanding of the content is where study groups can help...
Especially if you do not know many people in the class, study groups provide a way to informally meet other students you may not
normally meet on a given day, and give you a solid concrete time to study every week. It was well worth going for me - sure beats
trying to figure out all by yourself when you don't know what to do.
Final Words from Faculty:
- As the course instructor, I have learned more about student perspectives on learning. It's a great opportunity to get feedback
on teaching ideas. It is very satisfying for me to personally interact with motivated students on a weekly basis. I love their
questions and inquiring minds and their drive to help other students.
- I enjoyed getting to know the preceptors, getting feedback from preceptors about student concerns, suggestions, questions they had,
and their preparedness.
- The preceptors provided feedback about the course (in a respectful way) and I was able to better understand what the students were
"getting" and what they were struggling with, with respect to the class material. Having the opportunity to meet with a small group of
students made the teaching experience more enjoyable for me. I appreciated the opportunity to have some personal contact with individual
students, which is typically very difficult with a class of this size.
- Give it a whirl! [A response to the question: "What you say to another professor who asked you about using TTP in your course(s)?"]
