Graduate Student Writing Services FAQ
How much does it cost?
Every graduate student is provided with at least a few free credits (tied to the UT Learning Center's budget for the semester). After that, it's just $13.50 per session. You can schedule no more than two sessions per week.
What projects can I get help with?
You can get help with any writing project - class assignment, resume, grant, thesis, or even your dissertation.
Where do the consultations take place?
All consultations take place in the UT Learning Center (Jester, 3rd floor). At this time, we do not offer consultations via email or over the phone.
What if I want to see the same consultant again?
If you meet with a certain consultant and want to see the same person again, it's easy - just ask the consultant to "offer" you an appointment. If the consultant can accommodate your request (which may depend on his or her schedule, for example), they can use your EID to enter an appointment in the system that only you will be able to see. You may then accept or decline the offered appointment.
How do I cancel a session?
If you can't make a session, you must cancel the session online at least 24 hours in advance. We do this so that the consultant can rearrange his or her schedule as necessary, and so that another student can take advantage of the open appointment. While we appreciate you contacting your consultant by telephone or e-mail when you can't make an appointment, this does not substitute for canceling the session online.
I missed a session - what now?
If you do not show up to your session, and you used a credit to book your appointment, you will be locked out of the system until you pay for the missed appointment through Bevo Bucks (if you used Bevo Bucks to book the appointment, you will not be locked out). The lock will remain on your account, and you will not be able to book additional tutoring sessions until you pay for the missed appointment. You may not use credits to pay for the missed session - Bevo Bucks only.
What qualifications do your consultants have?
We individually interview and select our consultants. In addition to good writing and editing skills, we look for consultants from diverse academic backgrounds. Consultants also receive ongoing training throughout the semester.
I think I'd make a good consultant - what should I do?
We welcome inquiries about working for the UT Learning Center! If you're interested, just forward your vita or resume to Pamela Way at any time.
Can I comment about my consultant's performance - good or bad?
Yes! Randomly selected sessions are automatically followed by an electronic evaluation regarding your consultant's performance. If you do not get an electronic version, please contact Pamela Way for a copy by email. Although the results are shared with the consultants, the name of the person completing the evaluation is not. We take these evaluations, and all comments, very seriously. If you'd like to talk to someone about your session directly, please do not hesitate to contact Pamela Way, the Appointment Tutoring Coordinator.
