SUBJECT:
Request for Nominations for the Texas Parents Outstanding Student Award and The Mike Wacker Award
Texas Parents, the Parents Association of The University of Texas at Austin, will present awards to deserving students the weekend of October 21, 2005. Individuals and campus organizations are encouraged to nominate students who are worthy of these honors. Student organizations may nominate members of their group as well as other student leaders.
The Texas Parents Outstanding Student Award has been presented annually since it was established in 1951. It recognizes two students who symbolize the hundreds of outstanding student leaders on this campus. All nominees should be juniors or seniors whom you think are worthy of this award.
Last year, the outstanding students were Julie Wimmer and Jesus J. Castillon. Both recipients were extremely active both on and off campus. Julie was President of Orange Jackets and a Distinguished College Scholar. Jesus was Co-Chair for Texas Revue and a 2004 winner of the Bonfire Unity Scholarship.
The Mike Wacker Award has become a symbol of courage and perseverance for students who face extreme adversity. It is named for UT graduate and former Longhorn basketball player Mike Wacker. Nominees for this award should be students, who like Mike, give their best and exemplify personal sacrifice, dedication, esteem conviction, and faith. This award is presented only when a truly extraordinary student is nominated. Both Kevin Progar and Michael Squillace received this honor last year.
Nominations for both the Outstanding Student Award and the Mike Wacker Award must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2005. You may submit your nomination(s) using the forms linked to the bottom or this Web site. If you prefer to submit a paper copy, print and complete the nomination form(s) and send it (them) along with a letter supporting the nominations to Texas Parents Outstanding Student Selection Committee, Tany Norwood, Assistant Dean of Students, Office of the Dean of Students, Campus Mail Code A5800. Incomplete or late nominations will not be considered by the committee.
If you have any questions, please contact Tany Norwood at 471-1201 or tnorwood@mail.utexas.edu.
NOTE: Should your nominee be selected as a finalist, you may be asked to contribute to the awards presentation by providing an audio voice-over describing the merit of your nominee. A representative from Texas Parents will contact you to arrange this, if necessary.
