SEXUAL ASSSAULT PREVENTION
Security Policies and Procedures

Information regarding the University's campus sexual assault programs to prevent sex offenses and procedures to follow when a sex offense occurs

a) Educational programs to promote the awareness of rape, acquaintance rape, and other forcible and nonforcible sex offenses are offered by a variety of campus agencies and units. These programs and their sponsoring agencies are discussed in Item 4. above. Programming varies from semester to semester, depending upon the needs of our students and the resources of the agencies involved. All members of the University community should review the University's "Prohibition of Sexual Assault" policy contained in Appendix H of the General Information Catalog.

b) Procedures to follow if a sex offense occurs:

1. Call 911 immediately to report the offense and seek medical attention without delay
2. Contact the University Police at 471-4441 and/or the Austin Police Department to report the offense. Reporting an assault does not mean that the victim must press charges or take the case to criminal trial or a University disciplinary hearing. Sexual assaults and other sex offenses should be reported to the police as soon as possible to minimize risks to other persons and to ensure that evidence related to the offense is preserved as described at: http://www.utexas.edu/admin/utpd/sexualassault.html
3. Students living on campus should contact the Hall Coordinator or a senior administrator in the Division of Housing and Food Service (471-8631)
4. Contact the Office of the Dean of Students/Student Judicial Services to discuss filing a complaint if the offense was committed by a University student
5. Contact the Counseling and Mental Health Center (471-3515); 24 Hour Telephone Counseling at 471-2255; or SafePlace (267-SAFE) to obtain support services and other assistance
6. Students may seek the assistance of any of the persons or agencies described in Section A.1. above in notifying the appropriate authorities of a sex offense, forcible or nonforcible. Institutional personnel will assist students in notifying law enforcement authorities upon request.

c) The University will provide students assistance in changing academic and on-campus living situations after an alleged sexual offense if so requested by the victim and if accommodations are reasonably available. Arrangements for changes in academic schedules can be made by contacting the Dean of Students. Arrangements for changes in (or moving to) on-campus living accommodations should be made through the Director of Housing & Food Service. Other assistance is available from these agencies:

Counseling and Mental Health Center (471-2255)
Confidential telephone counseling 24 hours per day, 365 days per year
Individual and group therapy (471-3515)

University Health Services (471-4955)
Medical services related to injuries, post-sexual assault, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy testing, and referrals to appropriate community services

Austin SafePlace
(267-SAFE)
Support services and other assistance

d) The Office of the Dean of Students conducts campus disciplinary proceedings in cases of alleged sexual offenses (forcible and non-forcible). Policies and procedures regarding campus disciplinary proceedings are described in Appendices C and H of the General Information Catalog. The accused and the accuser are entitled to the same opportunities to have others present during a campus disciplinary proceeding involving sex offenses and both will be informed of the final determination with respect to an alleged sex offense and any sanction that is imposed against the accused. Providing this information to the accused and accuser does not violate provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacty Act (FERPA). Sanctions in University disciplinary proceedings regarding rape, acquaintance rape, or other forcible or nonforcible sex offenses range from probation to permanent expulsion.
