If you could do one or more things to improve UT Connect or the process of connecting to and using the Internet here at UT Austin, what would it be?

easier to read when menu comes up

More reliable 56K connections (I seldom reach speeds of 31K, though I understand a big part of that is my location in North Austin and the several "telephone line jumps" that the location entails)

Dude, please don't have me on hold so long when I call the ACITS help desk! Hire more people, please!

Give us better and updated software with the service.  Make the remote printing more user friendly.

Make it easier to install - give either printed directions of indicate where/how directions can be obtained before trying to install.

I believe it would be easier to make one that is ready for the ethernet connection and does not need to have help for configuration of a modem.  Especially for those of us who work on campus.

List all software on the cd in one window, do not use "extras" window.

Allow downloads from the Internet.

I am very satisfied with the UT Connect.

include the software for secure tn3270 - also, acrobat writer would be very helpful

improve the success rate of making the connection and staying connected.  In the beginning I got bumped off many times, and lately it takes several tries to get on.

I would improve the reliability of the connection.  Every time I've connected to the Internet through UT, at some point in the session, the connection is lost and have I to try to reconnect.

Make it faster, but I know that is not possible...

1.  Make it available on additional media for those who do not have CD drives (floppies, zip, jaz, etc)
2.  Make it available for a wider variety of platforms, in particular for linux and solaris
3.  More flexible options for the subscription cycle ( e.g., 2 years for $30, 3 years for $35, etc)

Speed up internet downloading

I almost never use UT Connect, since I have a job on campus.
I simply could no longer stand the fact that Telesys connections are slow and fail frequently.
That is why I can't even recall which anti-virus program I have on my home computer -- I haven't turned the computer on in nearly 2 weeks.
I actually drive 15 minutes each way to use my office connection if I need to use the Internet for more than 1 hr on the weekend and have stopped checking my e-mail on weekends unless I need the Internet for something else and come to school.
I am seriously considering ending my subscription, and the only thing that has kept me from doing so already is that I find it immensely useful to have an @mail.utexas.edu address and to be able to use Eudora with it.
Unfortunately, for about the past month, I haven't even used Eudora and have gone straight to using only web-based mail to download my UT mail.

More than anything else, you need to supply adequate connections -- ones at 56K that do not fail literally more often than not.

It seems to me to work OK.

go gigabyte

Every so often, there is a busy signal when trying to connect to Telysis.  More lines/connections should be installed to accomadate more users at once.
Also, instructions should be giving on how to configure MS Outlook to upload/download e-mails from our UT e-mail accounts.

I'm not sure how to resolve the problem I encounter with Telesys. Your survey did not allow me to check more than one box, but I use both telesys (when I am connecting off-campus) and an ethernet connection when I am connecting my laptop from work.  Telesys is invariably slow, often inaccessible if I am more than a few miles from campus (I don't know why the distance makes a difference, but it does. I can sometimes get a very fast telephone connection from a couple of miles from campus, but no access--continuous problem messages--from, say, north Austin.) Although accessibility and speed have improved since I first starting using telesys in 1994, I still find both sub-standard and frustrating.

1. On surveys like this, make room for those who, like me (and I'm sure many others),
use both home and office computers all the time. On this survey
you force the user to choose, when two versions are often true.
2. Write and obtain better support for those who run large
monitors with high resolution. This often seems to stump programs.

figure out why i was supposed to buy it...i don't know that it was worth it for the applications that it has

My connection from home with UT Connect is my primary concern as my connect at work is in the hands of my computer department.
The answers given to these questions represented my use from a computer which uses a the dial-up modem connection.
The main thing I would like to see is better HELP from the HELP desk.

One of the things that frustrates us in using UT Connect at home is that very frequently we are not able to connect.  Don't know why that is.

Advice about how to use on the road - with setups for different permutations.

I get disconnected too often from telesys, thereby disrupting
my work. It would be good if you could work on improving this.
(In fact, it disconnected me while I was filling out this survey)

I think it is great!  The help desk is incredible!

Include retired faculty in the upgrades for the Antivirus program.

Have a direct button on the web page for accessing updates.  I always have to search and go in circles until I stumble across the magic formula...

It's not as bad as AOL but sometimes it takes four attempts to connect.  Occasionally--I get "disconnected" in the middle of a search.

More information in non-technical language about updates and new resources.

Make it compatiable with Windows ME.  I installed ME and I had to uninstall it because my computer would not work with it. I cannot believe this!!

The connection rarely goes through the first time I dial in.
I would work on fixing that.

DSL capability

Faster access--I usually have to make 2 to 4 and sometimes 5 attempts to get a connection above 26000bps.

Ethernet everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!

Provide updates to programs on the web. Eg. Upgrade from Eudora 4.x -> 5

Maybe there should be a lower cost alternative CD.  Not everyone needs all the software, even if it is a good value.

improving the connection speed, and the reliability which

i can connect without getting kicked offline

Increase connection speeds

Often, through no fault of my own or related to technical glitches on my side of the connection, I cannot access UT through dial-up services. Usually this is because the server is down or not responding for extended periods of time, due to volume or something else. Improving service and increasing bandwidth would be great.

Provide more information about updating UT Connect, written in terms understandable to those of us who use computers, but aren't interested in knowing more about them than, say, the refrigerator that we also rely on.

since i don't know too much about this computer stuff, i'd say my experience using and installing the programs was relatively easy. there were some differences in the printed manual and what actually popped up on my computer screen, but i figured it out. it was also kind of confusing that i was given a lot of different packets for different programs on one's computer (like microsoft ME, windows, etc.). i was unsure of my exact program and didn't know which microsoft to use because i don't believe that microsoft ME was an option, and i didn't know which plan of action to follow, because, once again, i'm not too bright with computer stuff, and i tend to mess things up by trying to do things twice to make sure i actually did it right. the most confusing aspect of the software was the stuff about installing some printing thing (remote printing?). what is remote printing? do i need it? can i print without it? how do i use it? i had no idea of the answers to these questions, so i just installed it anyway (even though the instructions looked different than it actually looked on my computer screen), and i'm not even sure if i've ever used it at all or if i use everyday and i just don't know. the help desk was particularly handy, though.

Disable the auto-disconnect on the internet connection!

???  perhaps more help for the novice computer user.  basic directions.

More detailed and better organized web pages.
More advanced configuration information. No specifics listed currently on how to configure LDAP in Eudora.

I usually have to attempt to connect several times before I get a successful connection: I rarely get a busy signal, but I just can't connect.  I've talked to other people and this sees to be a common problem.

I wish it were a faster connection.  I also wish the system would never be down, as it sometimes is.  I also wish there were more knowledgeable people on the help desk, and that they were available 24 hours a day.  Or 17 hours a day.  7am-midnight.

I would have UT computing solve the problems I have when
dialing in, including (1) the ring and/or the modem sound
cuts off and I get a message from the phone company telling
me to hang up and dial again; (2) I get a busy signal (not
nearly as often as the first); (3) some time after connecting,
the connection becomes completely unresponsive, and I have to
disconnect and dial in again.

lower the cost

The CD seems like a waste to me, since I'm already connected and can download updates, differential pricing for cd and non-media purchases might suit me. The installer is a pretty ugly beast for someone who knows what they're doing. The only *real* value I get from it is Eudora and Virex, the rest is generally freeware.

Have someone stress to me the importance of reading the
"how to install UT connect" literature that came with it.
Being as computer illerate as I am, the directions were very
helpful to me.  I used them the second time I tried to install
the program.  However, I still had to get some help from
a friend who knew more about computers.  I didn't know what
some of the terminology meant.  I still don't know what all
the items listed in # 8 above are.  I learned a lot about
UT connect by doing this survey.

make UT Connect connections go faster, offer other types of internet access through UT at low rates such as DSL or cable modem

Have your software compatible with Windows ME. Have all the
programs on the CD updated to their latest versions.

Some days I get disconected from the server often very particularly in the evenings , making it almost impsible to work on line. Other times it takes long for the server to respond while I am conected. it looks like if my turn to be served takes just longer but the rest of the day (65%)it works just fine. It would be great if you could improve conection response particulary in peak demand times.

I found some of the printed documentation confusing, but can't remember what. Maybe review the documentation, and make sure the step by step program is proper.

What about a web publishing program?

I can't honestly think of anything to improve the existing service.  I am very happy with it.

To improve the system connection. It goes down too often.

Highspeed connection as in Roadrunner

At time I work at home and the system is so SLOW!!!.  Need a faster connection.

It seems like the connection is slower than in the last city I lived in.  How about some non-profit ethernet action?

improve OSWproxy delay time in opening mainframe.
Speed of internet connecting is very important; not sure if slowness is because of my machine, problems with actual site or UT connect (maybe all 3?).
I couldn'f find the help desk  hours that phones are answered on the website.

get rid of the 14 K servers and sometimes I get 9600. My usual is 19600 to 21900. rarely do I get 30 K.
On rare occasions I get a busy signal but within a few seconds I get a free line. It is much better than it used to be.
On campus I am on the ethernet and it works fine.

I have yet to encounter any problems.

configure viruscan to do email and download scans automatically and to update dats and superdats automatically.

Quarterly updates.  Some easier way to compare versions of software on your machine to the versions on the disk, so you'll know which ones you might want to update.

I get kicked off at least once everytime I connect and it also takes about 3-4 times on average to actually connect to the internet.

note:  these responses based on my home PC.  I also get UT Connect for the office (Macs) for the virus protection software and ease of reloading eudora, fetch, & web browsers if necessary.

more lines because I often get disconnected, or have trouble
getting in

This probably exists, but give step-by-step instructions for
configuring TCP/IP.

Make it easier to use enhanced TN3270 to connect to the mainframe from home.

Could y'all run a 100baseT to my house.
I have to admit I have used the Telesys since 94 and I think
I have the best ISP going, if only it were faster.
Thanks

ifeq501

I never could update the virus protection that came with UT Connect so I purchased my own virus protection. The description of the steps needed to update the virus protection should be improved.

Everything should be web-based. There should be one installation step, which is "pick your favorite browser". Preferably not even that; just give them whatever works best on that OS. Don't waste time dealing with client applications, send 'em to webmail, do the virus scanning on the server, use an http web client for file transfers or stick to the services in Blackboard.

It'd be great if UT would negotiate a package deal for Roadrunner or DSL at a discounted rate.

I stopped using Eudora Pro because it constantly froze my computer, so I don't think that was a good program.

This questionnaire forces me to make choices that do not reflect my real behaviors regarding these issues...most often I must use several sources to get the updated UT Connect programs on my computers. Also, I have more than one computer and the situation differs for each one.

i sometimes can't log on in the evenings when computer use is most heavy.

Better response from Eudoro.  My computer hangs up too often on Check Mail , In  Box & Out Box

Campus-supplied high-speed internet.

Not tell people they need this software as it is a waste of $20.

e-mail announcements when upgrades are available

Longer connection.  I get bumped after every e-mail that I read.

Improve speed.  I have 56.6Kb modem installed, but can never dial in faster than 26.4Kb (i.e. 28.8).
(perhaps I'm just not configured right.)

Sell the software at more than one location.

I'm happy, just don't forget the basic mission.  Most important is an alternative to Microsoft (i.e., navigator and eudora pro)

I am happy with my connet service

Provide auto-updates and newer versions of all software.  Make it compatible with Win ME.

Faster dial up connection process.....

very satisfied

help desk house calls

Faster connection time
Easier instructions when installing
Firewall protection

Nothing, this is one of those little extra perks for staff members that I hope they take advantage of.  For only $5, you can't beat the price.
Thanks.

So far, I've been pretty happy with dial-up Telesys.
However, has any thought been given to having DSL for
students, faculty, and staff?

Learning to use a scanner to incorporate photographs
into my documents would be helpful.

speed up the download process,it takes to long to download somrthing on this software.

Have all applications downloadable, as well as the registration/renewal process.  This would enable me to simply download the files as needed.  Although, having a CD is pretty handy as well.

Script the default install of AntiVirus software to update virus definitions automatically. I just visited a client who had not updated their Virex definitions since this time last year.
There's a script that finds currently installed UT Connect applications on the Mac platform. Might the same be done for Windows?
Install support for SSL on all UT mail servers. I suspect that when UT personnel read e-mail via high-speed Internet or other ISPs, their passwords are being sent in clear text.

We need a better TN3270 program.

Better, more easily available and responsive telephone help.  It is telephone hell right now.
More transparent ACITS help pages, for example, finding the page for instructions on how to forward email to another account is much harder than it should be.  It should be easily vible on the overall ACITS menu (it's not) and easily found with the search system (it's not).
A more adequate relation of pages, especially help pages, to the search commands.  It is pretty random now.

I would end the requirement of physically exchanging the old UT Connect CD for a new one every time a new version appears. Our department is located in Lake Austin Centre, and getting to the main campus can be difficult to schedule. We can burn CDs, so if you just put an ISO image of UT Connect on an FTP site, we could download it and burn it directly. You could still bill our department for each download (or something similar) if you wished.

keep the same programs from one disk to another, and keep them in the same location, ie., basic or advanced.

Inclusion of SSH client most appreciated, more secure programs, and better documentation concerning all the features of VirusScan would be nice, the default install just does not invoke all the features. Opera would be nice (third browser)
UT Connect is still the best deal on campus! thanks!

Make the software available for download from the internet instead of having to purchase it on CD-ROM.  You could charge a lower few for the abilit to download the software.

Make the documentation easier to understand.

Make sure to install a complete list of help files on the CD for connecting to the web.  Once you get connected from a computer at home, you can find the other help info on the ACS web pages.  However, if you can't get your modem to work and you don't have another computer with internet access established, the on-line help is moot.

PERHAPS UT COULD OFFER LOW-RATE HIGHSPEED CONNECTIONS SUCH AS DSL FOR STUDENTS AT HOME
YOU COULD WORK TOGETHER WITH TIME WARNER OR SOME OTHER ISP SO THEY CAN PROVIDE THEIR SERVICES AT A LOW COST
LET US USE PROGRAMS TO DOWNLOAD STUFF
ALSO ALLOW US TO SEND FILES TO OTHER COMPUTERS

Instructions for reaching McAfee updates incomplete; need names of files to click.
But, mainly, BOUQUETS to ACIT; Help desk provides excellent service.

Provide updates, fixes, and patches information concerning standard campus software and the UT network to departmental contacts (esp. those of us who are not as computer savvy).

Include a program like Cleansweep to remove old files no longer needed.  Also, a program to automatically clean out old Netscape cache files, cookies, tmp files etc.
Thanks for the opportunity to contribute.  You do good work.

Note prominantly that updates can and should be obtained from the website.  Also, I've had difficulty connecting lately...heavy usage?

I found TeleSys to be terrible; after 3-4 YEARS of using it
and constantly being knocked off, I installed AltaVista Free
then NetZero; using the same telephone line, same modem, and
the same computer, I do not get knocked off AltaVista or
NetZero; most of my computing friends in engineering have
had similar experience; I have been using computers since
Bill Bard wrote PP code for the CDC 6600.

Give end users access to support for McAfee antivirus (direct support from NAI).  You can't get to there KB without a grant number.

better anti-virus

Maybe it's time to get rid of Eudora and stick with webmail or Outlook (?).  Since I buy mulitple department licenses, I need to contact software@utexas to get info regarding license renewals, I would ike to be able to access that information on my own via web.  I sent this survey a while back but wasn't sure if it went through since I got a trasmittal error.

High speed access if very important, I just wish it weren't so expensive.  Many times the system is too busy to get through.  I think that with high speed access most of my problems would vanish.

The main problem is, it's too slow for off-campus users
relying on Telesys connections, so it's hard to see what you
could do. We dropped our Telesys connection and went to Road
Runner. I don't recall much about about our UTConnect CD
installation at home.
