UT Tower Wordmark

Notes from Digital Video Producers Meeting on
May 21, 2003

Susan Rittereiser (from Digital Library Services) and Peter Keane (from the Library Instruction and Information Literacy Office in UGL) talked about and demonstrated SMIL presentations they have done for the General Libraries.

Susan talked and Peter demonstrated. They reported that the General Libraries created these tutorials to better use the resources on UTlib online. The project was called eLEADER and can be found at www.lib.utexas.edu/eleader/. The audience for this site is students, faculty and staff. It was an ITAC project and utilizes SMIL technology and RealMedia file format, there requiring the use of RealOnePlayer. There is no RealPlayer for Mac OS X. There is no SMIL editor. GRINS is pretty good but expensive.

Peter demonstrated the PCL Virtual Tour (www.lib.utexas.edu/pcl/tour/). W3C has recently created a new working group on the subject of Timed-Text (www.w3.org/AudioVideo/TT/).

There was discussion on workflow and whether or not you type a script before recording or do it off-the-cuff. It seems to be personal preference.

Aaron Choate (from Digital Library Services) then demonstrated the Electronic Reserve System, or ERes or EReserves (reserves.lib.utexas.edu/). This allows faculty members to reserve electronic resources for their courses. Access to the information can be password protected and only kept available for a pre-determined length of time.

We then discussed training classes that people would like to attend over the summer. Mark Rogers (College of Communications) can provide Final Cut Pro classes, Basics and Advanced. There is also interest in a class about Workflow: Planning to Production, and one on Cleaner. I will work to make them happen and wil send out a summer schedule as soon as it is created.
