We want to put cameras in
rooms, so that a professor can click a button and have the class recorded digitally
and posted to a website. Currently, a Prof has us shoot a class on VHS and we
make the tape available in the library. But we'd like to make them available
on a Prof specific classroom page... without a massive digitize effort.
Basically, folks agree that using RealProducerPlus to capture and encode video from a classroom would work well for creating Web-ready RealVideo. We need a fast PC with plenty of hard drive space, a capture card, a camera and mic, and the software (RealProducerPlus). And in our case, ethernet to send it on to a RealServer. The issue here is still how automated we can make it, and that is still in discussion.
We are also looking at Polycom and Tandberg videoconferencing systems (as mentioned by some at the meeting) as a complimentary system to allow for webconferencing and perhaps double to duties of the camera for straight recording of the class. The set-top box cameras have nifty video outputs that could feed a Real encoding system. So far, Polycom looks most promising and we are demo'ing that next week.
