Training

All TIP Academic Peer Mentors participate in extensive leadership training. TIP mentors complete a three-hour course, NSC 321: An Introduction to Peer Mentoring and Leadership (insert link to syllabus in the course title if possible – syllabus attached). The course is offered each semester and is open to all peer leaders within the College of Natural Sciences through the Peer Leader Academy (PLA). TIP Academic Peer Mentors typically take the course the spring semester before they begin as a mentor.

The PLA office works to serve students and programs within the College of Natural Sciences (CNS) by providing a central employment application and access to first-rate training for all undergraduate peer leaders (tutors, mentors, paraprofessionals, or peer advisors). All CNS peer leaders attain a minimum of Level I certification through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) by completing 15 hours of training and 50 hours of documented student contact within their first year of employment (first two semesters). The NSC 321 course is one method of earning training hours, students can also attend training conferences and supplemental training sessions that are offered during each semester. To view upcoming training opportunities please visit PLA Training Calendar.
