Student
in the Texas IP begin their studies with courses
in critical thinking and writing. The Critical
Thinking Seminar calls upon students
to recognize and appreciate the core intellectual
attributes expected in all academic endeavors
at the University. Offered by the Department of
Rhetoric and Writing, Critical
Reading and Persuasive Writing stresses
rigorous analysis and practice in writing arguments.
Both
courses support the goals endorsed by the Commission
of 125, an advisory group that recently evaluated
the university's core curriculum. To have a first-class
undergraduate educational experience, the Commission
believes every student should learn to "think
and read critically, write cogently, speak persuasively,
and work both independently and as part of a team."
The
critical thinking and writing courses are designed
to enable Texas IP students to become confident
participants in the university's intellectual
life.
