Erle Janssen
This fall's Waller Creek Cleanup was dedicated to former Environmental Health and Safety Director, Erle Janssen. Erle was a passionate proponent of making sure Waller Creek was not forgotten in the Campus Master Plan. In doing so he initiated many creek improvement projects such as bank stabilization and the biannual Waller Creek Cleanup. In addition to keeping the creek environmentally sound, Erle believed in making the creek "a quiet place for people to retreat from the busy life of campus". Thank you Erle for your dedication and commitment to making our creek an asset to campus for generations to come.
"We are very sad to hear of Erle's passing. He was a great friend of the TNSC and a great friend of the Creek. He'll be missed."

Did you know there is a natural oasis right here on campus?
Waller Creek is an urban watershed that runs from North Austin through the city and campus into Lady Bird Lake downtown. Even though it's in the middle of the city, the creek is home to a great diversity of wildlife. From the Great Blue Heron to the Roseate Skimmer Dragonfly, many types of animals rely on the creek habitat for survival.
But being an urban watershed means that Waller Creek suffers many pollution problems too. Trash from the streets washes down storm drains and into the creek. Sometimes people even dump large items into the creek so they don't have to pay for disposal. This pollution can adversely affect the wildlife, water quality, and beauty of Waller Creek.
