Discovery Drawers
These drawers include two major groups.
The first are topic oriented with titles such as "Weird eaters" or "Been to the Beach?"
The others are a geologic time 'stratigraphic series', linked by color codes to a large wall chart known as a 'stratigraphic section'.
Each of these drawers represents a different rock layer in the Austin area and those same rock layers known as 'formations' are shown in order of geologic age (vertical position) on the wall chart, the oldest rocks being at the base of the section.
Visitors can locate their home on the accompanying geology maps and find out which rock layer the home is built upon. They can then open the relevant drawer and see which fossils might be in the back yard.
