The Crew-Archive of The Crew
Crystal joined NPL in 2007 as one of the first students under the new grant to image and conserve the type collection. She quickly became an expert in conserving specimens, scanning original labels and digital imaging.
She also had some wise words for the students who follow.
Crystal was sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to the Non-vertebrate Paleontology Lab.
Comment: Crystal graduated with her degree in Geology in December 2007 and went on to Dallas.
"1. To communicate!!
This is a big project that needs cohesive work and style done to make it look good and to turn out useful.
2. Ask questions!!
There were many times when I could have assumed that the name of a specimen was correct, but it wasn't. These little details are what will make this collection even better.
3. Understand the final outcome!!
It is easy to get caught up in just one step of the project. It is important to understand that someone else may put the finishing touches on your work, so doing your part well helps everyone. And by understanding how all the pieces come together can help you pay more attention to the big picture."
The part I appreciated the most was getting to see all the amazing specimens and getting to photograph them. I hope all this work ends up helping researchers in the future....."
