Field Trip to
8 :00 AM - 4:30 PM Notes by Jo Schaper and Bill Elliott:
We
will provide a variety of activities. Everyone will have the opportunity for a
1.5 to 2 hour tour of
including
a cave restoration demonstration by Jon Beard and Michael Carter. This cave is
57° F (14° C), has
walkways,
but is usually lantern-toured. The park will furnish all the lanterns
they have, but recommends you
bring one
working headlamp if you have it. Dress for a show cave on-trail, but the park
staff might take you
off-trail if you dress like a caver!
All activities below are 2-3 hours in duration.
Mushroom
Cave trips are featured. This is an
easy wild cave, requiring a change of clothes, including towel,
trash bag
and normal cave gear. Mostly walking, but kneepads may be useful. No vertical
work. The tour will
talk
about cave life, history and changing management. Limited to 40 people total,
first come, first served, with
sign-up at the Symposium. Muddy
clothes are not allowed on the bus or in the visitor's center, and you will
be muddy!
Karst
Problems Bus tour: A street-clothes
tour of Elm Spring, Hickory Ridge, Sheep Cave entrance area
and
others is planned, with a stop at the Meramec visitor's center. Emphasis on
geology/hydrology management
park and land management issues. Good walking shoes, and maybe a pocket light are useful.
Another,
more strenuous management hike of the Hamilton Valley in the park is
planned. The valley is an old
town
site, including iron furnace ruins and visiting the entrance of
Emphasis on history/management of the area. About a mile of walking in weeds and minor knee-high
wading of
a creek
are involved. A change of pants/shoes and insect repellent are recommended. You
will be able to visit
visitor's center if you have not otherwise done so.
Shelter
Number 3, our base of operations, is
centrally located in the park beside the
distance
access to
Camper
Spring, and a bluff hiking trail.
Restrooms are nearby. Lunch will be at this Shelter. Shuttles will
circle
the park periodically for pickup-drop off. Feel free to explore on your own,
but EVERYONE must be back
at
Shelter Number 3 at
to entice you to return on time.
