Vertebrate Paleontology Laboratory: Graduate Student Financial Support

Teaching Assistantships are awarded to about 40 students by the Department of Geological Sciences. Stipends depend on the degree completed and include out-of-state tuition waivers. A teaching assistant is employed for nine months, devoting not more than halftime to teaching and the remainder to course work and research. Research Assistantships are awarded to about 18 students each semester by the Department of Geological Sciences, The Institute for Geophysics, and the Bureau of Economic Geology, the later of which functions as the state geological survey. In addition, graduate students are appointed as Research Assistants working on projects supported by grants to faculty from NSF, DOE, HEW, NASA, Petroleum Research Fund, University Research Institute, and industry. Research Assistantships can be awarded for the academic year; they carry a stipend equivalent to that of a teaching assistant. Fellowships supported by The University of Texas at Austin and several industries are awarded. The Geology Foundation of the Department of Geological Sciences provides research support and tuition grants, as do a number of professional societies.
