The southern façade of the Main Building
includes the seven great arches of the loggia, the pilasters between
the two-story windows, the colonnades of the southeast and southwest
wings, the carving that relieves the flatness of the walls, and the
red and orange panels of the fourth story. The inscription "Ye shall
know the truth and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32) carved across the
front is one of the many quotations that Dr. Battle incorporated into
the design of the Main Building. There are also two dates carved into
the southern face of the building. The year 1836, indicates the year
that Texas gained independence from the Republic of Mexico and the year 1936 was the date projected
for the completion of the new Main Building.
