Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sculptors: Jeffrey Varilla and Anna Koh-Varilla

Donor: Conceived and financed entirely by the University of Texas at Austin student body.

Location: East Mall of campus between Speedway and the East Mall Fountain.

Inscription: There are four bas relief panels that surround the bronze pedestal where King stands in his doctoral robes.
Front (East) Panel: Depicts the Lincoln Memorial where King gave his famous speech as the inscription indicates: " 'I Have A Dream' - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jan 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968."
Side (North) Panel: Peaceful demonstrators and marchers are shown enduring slings and arrows of racism and abuse with "We will meet your physical force with soul force" inscribed.
Side (South) Panel: Illustrates King in the Birmingham jail with inscription "Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."
Back (West) Panel: Portrays Coretta King and one of her children as they grieve the loss of King with "A man who won't die for something is not fit to live" inscribed. Each inscription is a quotation from King's own speeches or writings.
