UT Austin

The University of Texas at Austin permits use of protected logos and marks by colleges, schools, units (CSUs), and sponsored student organizations with appropriate prior approval and in accordance with the guidelines for each mark. The university wordmark files are available for download and can be used on printed materials in accordance with guidelines. The Longhorn Silhouette and university seal files may be obtained from the Office of Trademark Licensing upon design approval.

Logos and marks may not be used in any way that would constitute endorsement, approval, or underwriting of any corporation, product, activity, service, or contract by The University of Texas at Austin.

Academic and Administrative Units

For print materials, prior approval is not necessary for marks as long as guidelines are followed, except for the Longhorn Silhouette and university seal. All protected marks (including CSU marks that include the university name) that will be printed on products/merchandise must use a licensed vendor and be approved by the Office of Trademark Licensing. Some merchandise may be subject to royalties; review the university's royalty policy.

Process for Approval

  • Submit your request to the Office of Trademark Licensing using the Internal Campus Request Portal. Include your proposed design and answers to these questions.

  • Make sure your vendor is an officially licensed company approved to do business with The University of Texas at Austin.

  • The Office of Trademark Licensing will review your request, which typically takes three to five business days.

  • You will be contacted if more information is needed, which could extend the process.

  • A decision will be communicated to you.

Corporate Partners

Those corporations that have executed agreements either with the university or its representative and have been granted the rights to use the marks must have all use of the marks approved by the Office of Trademark Licensing. Corporate sponsorship agreements are limited to athletic events or other university activities that are co-sponsored by the university in accordance with Board of Regents rules and regulations.

Corporations that are working with a system institution on a project, each contributing equally, may use their name/logo with the university names/logos. An association where there is not an equal partnership is limited to stating as a fact what the universitys role is in the project, rather than placing the university’s logo/name next to the corporations. Projects in which the university provides informal assistance may not include reference to the university at all.
