Font Guidelines
In general, you should use Type 1 Adobe Postscript fonts. They're the most-widely used and most practical fonts for any publication. You can identify them by the letter "A" on the suitcase. Other types of fonts, such as TrueType (.tt), can sometimes cause a missprint. If possible don't use TrueType, but if you must, keep it to a minimum. Also, TSM is a Macintosh environment so we can only accept Macintosh Fonts in Macintosh Documents*
In some cases, we may be able to convert your document to Macintosh format from Windows but your fonts won't convert. We'll have to substitue Macintosh fonts. Please call or email us before sending Windows files.
Submitting Fonts
When submitting an ad or publication to TSM, always include every font you use in your newspaper, flyer, ad, etc. Although we have many fonts in our library, don't assume that we have the one you need.
When collecting fonts to submit to us, remember that some fonts may have additional components besides the familiar suitcase. There are sometimes also screen fonts and printer fonts that must accompany the suitcase. The icons for these fonts will have the same names as the suitcase.
If you are using PageMaker 6.5 or higher, you can automatically save your fonts with the document to a folder or disk for TSM. Open your document, go to the "Utilities" menu at the top, select the "Plug-Ins" and choose "Save for Service Provider." A dialog box will ask you where you want the document saved and will then collect all of your pages, images and fonts into that folder or disk.
If we're up against a deadline, or fonts are not provided even after we notify you, we reserve the right to substitute a similar font.
Do's and Don'ts
A font problem that we often have is "menu styling." As a rule, only the fonts that come with your computer, i.e. Helvetica, Geneva, Courier, New York, can be bold, italic, shadowed, by choosing those styles from the font menu. All other fonts must have a variant already built for that style. For example, if you want a Garamond font to be italic when printed, you must use the font "Garamond Italic." Changing regular Garamond to italic via the menu will look fine on your screen but won't print. This is especially dangreous when using a menu-styled font in EPS format. The font in the EPS document will default to Courier and we won't be able to make a substitution. To avoid this, always use the correct font.
