1960s

The Union addition included a recreation center, a movie theatre and a craft center as well as meeting rooms and offices. The new space supported further development of the Union's committee structure and its student development program. Students worked with professional advisors to create and present a broad range of educational, cultural, social and recreational programs which grew in size and scope during the decade.

As student unrest grew in the latter part of the 60s, the Union became the focus of another kind of activity. Public debates on social issues attracted large crowds, and controversial speakers drew demonstrators. The Union arch became the scene of anti-war protests, and a student protest of a different kind led to the transfer of the food service in the building to Union control.
